Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Greensboro Grasshoppers pulled out a 11-10 win in a back and forth series finale at Truist Stadium.
Winston-Salem got off to a blistering start, beginning in the bottom of the first inning.
Duke Ellis cracked a leadoff double, then promptly scored on a Moises Castillo single. A single by Oscar Colas and then a walk to Bryan Ramos loaded the bases. Luis Mieses then laced a single into center field, plating both Castillo and Colas to stake the Dash to an early 3-0 lead.
Greensboro had a rebuttal in the top of the second inning.
Endy Rodriguez and Jack Herman picked up back to back singles, then another single by Ernny Ordonez plated Rodriguez and made it a 3-1 ballgame. With runners on the corners now, Ordonez got himself caught in a rundown between first and second, which allowed Herman to make a break for the plate. He beat the throw from Castillo home and cut the Dash edge to 3-2.
In the top of the third, Dariel Lopez doubled with one man gone and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. A single from Fabricio Macias scored Lopez to tie the game at 3-3, then Jacob Gonzalez singled as well to put runners on the corners again. The next batter Endy Rodriguez was able to lift a ball in the air to left to score Macias on the sacrifice fly. With two runners on now, Ordonez jumped on the first pitch he saw from Luis Moncada and crushed it over the right-field wall for a three run blast. That put Greensboro ahead 7-3.
Winston-Salem was able to get a run back in the home half, when Tyler Osik ripped a single to score Ramos from second base.
After seeing their lead cut to 7-4, the 'Hoppers found another response in the top of the fourth.
Sammy Siani jumped on the first pitch for a leadoff single, before swiping second base. Jackson Glenn got hit by a pitch, then Dariel Lopez smoked a double to centerfield, with Siani scoring and Glenn moving to third base. A single by Macias plated Glenn, and Greensboro took a 9-4 lead.
Trailing by five going to the bottom of the fifth inning, Winston-Salem was unfazed. Castillo got hit by a pitch to start, then both Colas and Ramos got walked to load the bases with no outs. Greensboro called on
Ricky DeVito to navigate the jam. He got ahead of Luis Mieses 0-2, but Mieses smacked a double into the gap to bring both Castillo and Colas home, with Ramos parking himself at third base. The line kept moving with Tyler Osik, who continued his blazing hot stretch at the plate with a two-run single into right field, and the Dash trailed just 9-8. Harvin Mendoza then doubled to put runners on second and third, and Alsander Womack tied the game with his fielder's choice groundout to plate Osik.
However, Greensboro countered yet again in the top of the sixth. Dariel Lopez reached on a one-out single, before Macias cracked a 1-0 pitch onto the left field walkway for a two-run home run, and the 'Hoppers led once again 11-9.
The Dash got the first two men on base in the seventh inning, but a pair of excellent defensive plays by Greensboro held the game at 11-9.
In the bottom of the eighth, Duke Ellis sliced the deficit to 11-10 with his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot into the right field seats.
Cameron Junker got the call for the Grasshoppers to handle the ninth inning and protect a one run lead. He allowed a one-out walk to Mendoza, but nothing further as Greensboro won the series finale 11-10. Junker earned his fifth save of the season, with Oliver Mateo earning his first win, and Wilber Perez suffering the loss.
Winston-Salem begins a series in Bowling Green on Tuesday, June 14th.
