Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

Brooklyn, NY - Jaylen Palmer's grand slam in the bottom of the seventh powered Brooklyn to a 5-2 win over the Aberdeen IronBirds on Sunday afternoon. It was Brooklyn's second straight win over Aberdeen - who had lost just three road games all season prior to this weekend.

Early on, it was a pitchers' duel on Sunday afternoon as Aberdeen starter Peter Van Loon and Cyclones hurler Nick Zwack kept the bats off-balance early off. Van Loon tossed 4.0 shutout frames, scattering two hits and two walks while striking out seven. Zwack struck out eight over 4.0 innings but had one blemish - a solo shot by Connor Norby in the top of the third - that gave Aberdeen an early 1-0 lead.

That would be all the offense until the bottom of the seventh when the Cyclones turned things around. Fernando Villalobos, Jose Peroza, and Jose Mena had three straight singles to start the frame before Jaylen Palmer connected on a 3-2 offering and sent it off the scoreboard in left field to give Brooklyn a 4-1 advantage.

Aberdeen wouldn't go quietly though. In the top of the 8th the IronBirds scored a run on a wild pitch to make it 4-2 and put runners on the corners with two outs. Grant Hartwig was summoned from the bullpen and got Coby Mayo to pop out to shortstop for the final out of the frame to keep the Cyclones on top by a pair of runs.

In the bottom of the frame, the 'Clones extended the lead back to three on an RBI single from Jose Peroza - who finished the game 3-for-4 - that made it 5-2.

Hartwig retired the 'Birds in order in the top of the ninth to collect his third save since joining the Cyclones on May 21st.

Brooklyn will now head on the road for a series in Wilmington (DE) with eight games in six days thanks to a pair of rainouts earlier in the season. Brooklyn will return to Maimonides Park on Tuesday, June 21st when they open up with the Battle for the Beach against the Jersey Shore BlueClaws.
