Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, Ga. - The GreenJackets opened up a four game series tonight at home against Charleston. It was over before it started. The GreenJackets scored 11 runs in the first two innings, highlighted by two bases-clearing doubles in the second inning in a 16-0 thrashing over Charleston at Lake Olmstead Stadium. All 11 runs were charged to RiverDogs starter and losing pitcher Able Gomez. Winning pitcher Jonathan Sanchez pitched five innings, giving up no runs and five hits while striking out 8. Brian Stirm pitched four innings of scoreless relief, picking up his first save of the season.
Alex Requena typified the night for the GreenJackets when he led off the first with an infield single. After Requena stole second and went to third on catcher Irwil Rojas passed ball, Marcus Sanders walked. Julian Benavidez lined out for the first out of the inning before Brian Horwitz singled in the first run of the game. Horwitz singled to left, driving in Requena and advancing Sanders to second. Before Simon Klink even saw a pitch to hit, Sanders stole third and went home on Gomez' wild pitch. Klink singled off the third baseman's glove, advancing Horwitz to third. Jon Armitage hit a sacrifice fly to center, driving in Horwitz. With two outs in the inning, Carlos Sosa hit a double to right that drove in Klink all the way from first. After Steve Holm walked, Lisandro Disla singled to center, however Sosa was out at home on a nice throw from Tim Battle. The GreenJackets scored four runs on five hits in the inning.
After Sanchez struck out three in a row following consecutive singles, the GreenJackets kept their hit parade going. Once again, Alex Requena led off the inning, flying out to right. Sanders singled to center, through Gomez' legs. After Sanders stole second and went to third on the catcher's throwing error, Benavidez walked. Horwitz singled to center, driving in Sanders. Klink walked, loading the bases for Armitage and he delivered. Armitage drilled a fastball to the gap in left center for a double and clearing the bases. The double gave the GreenJackets an 8-0 lead however they were not done. Sosa singled to left, advancing Armitage to third, still with only one out. Steve Holm hit into fielder's choice at third, nailing Armitage at the plate. Gomez walked Disla, loading the bases and ending his night. Reliever Marvin Moscat tried to end the romp but was rudely greeted by a bases-clearing double from Alex Requena to right center, giving the GreenJackets an 11-0 lead. Sanders singled to left but Requena was thrown out at home trying for the GreenJackets 12th run.
The GreenJackets added five runs in the 8th inning, all off reliever Shaun Parker. In all, Augusta had 20 hits, walked eight times, and the most important statistic of the night, went 12-20 with runners in scoring position.
