ASHEVILLE, NC-Trailing 9-4 after four innings tonight, the Catfish scored 10 unanswered runs over the last four innings in Asheville, beating the Tourists 14-9 to even the four-game series at one game. DH Chris Westervelt entered the game tonight just 3 for his first 28, but went 5-6 tonight with two doubles, a HR, and three RBI to lead the Catfish comeback effort. CF Jeremy Brown had his first two hits in a Catfish uniform tonight including a tiebreaking two-run single in the seventh inning to give the Fish the lead for good. LHP Chad Bailey won his first game of 2005 with 3.1 innings of relief tonight for the Catfish (35-49, 7-8 second half) in the win over Asheville (45-40, 7-9 second half)
The Catfish trailed 4-2 after four innings tonight, as Asheville CF Matt Miller hit a pair of two-run homers in the first three innings, his second and third of the series. In the fourth, Westervelt's second hit of the game, a two-run HR to left tied the game at two. Asheville sent 10 hitters to the plate in a five-run fourth inning, taking a 9-4 lead.
The Fish chipped away at the lead in the sixth, as Brown had his first hit of the 2005 season with a single to right, driving home a run. Trailing 9-6 in the seventh inning, the Fish scored six times on nine base hits (all singles). The key hit of the inning was Brown's two-run single up the middle, giving the Fish a 11-9 lead. 12 hitters came to bat in the seventh for Columbus, and each Catfish hitter tonight had at least one hit in the victory.
Tomorrow the Fish try to take the lead in the series against the Tourists when LHP Scott Elbert (3-4, 3.39 ERA) takes the hill against Asheville RHP Ching-Lung Lo (4-4, 5.01 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
