Arkansas Travelers News Release
Dr Pepper Ballpark, Frisco, TX - RHP Nick Green (8-3) struck out a season-high eleven batters in eight innings as the Arkansas Travelers (23-28, 47-73) had two pitchers combine on a 1-0 shutout victory over the Frisco RoughRiders (27-24, 62-59). After retiring the first 16 Frisco batters, Green allowed a single and a triple over eight innings and RHP Rich Thompson (9) pitched around a leadoff walk for a shutout ninth inning earning the save. On a night when Frisco RHP Eric Hurley (2-1) also pitched well, Green was masterful. He struck out the first five batters and did not issue a walk while Hurley allowed just two hits with six strikeouts and a walk over six innings. Travs RF Nathan Haynes scored the game's only run in the first inning and just one more runner advanced to third base for the rest of the game. The Travs are 2-10 against Frisco with both wins coming on shutouts including a 12-0 victory last Monday.
Leading off the game, Haynes singled to right field and stole second base. LF Aaron Peel pushed a bunt along the first-base line that Hurley fielded. His throw to first base was dropped by 1B Jim Fasano for an error allowing Peel to reach while Haynes advanced to third base. When SS Brandon Wood hit a fielder's choice to short, Haynes scored from third base.
Green came out firing with three strikeouts to begin the game and he then struck out the first two batters of the second inning before Jake Blalock lined out to end the frame.
Hurley set down nine straight batters until Wood led off the fourth with a double. Hurley caught Wood stealing in a rundown at third base and the Travs did not record another base hit.
Green carried the perfect game through 5.1 innings, but 3B Enrique Cruz hit a sharp one-hopper that bounced into 2B Eric Rodland's chest and into centerfield for a single. Green threw a wild pitch right after sending Cruz to second base. However Green bounced back by striking out Casey Benjamin and inducing a pop fly to center by Tim Hulett.
Green whiffed two straight batters to begin the eighth and C Kevin Richardson followed by jacking a first-pitch fastball deep to left-center field. Richardson thought he had tied the game with a home run, but the ball apparently hit the yellow home-run line on the fence and bounced back into the outfield. Richardson stopped at third base with a triple as Frisco Manager Darryl Kennedy argued the umpire's decision. The umpires conferred and held up the call that the ball did not go over the fence. Green ended the inning by getting Cruz to bounce to short.
Thompson got into trouble beginning the ninth inning with a walk to Benjamin. Thompson then fell behind Hulett 3-1 before he attempted to bunt Benjamin to second base. 3B Devin Day charged the ball and fired to second base where Wood forced Benjamin before whipping the ball to Rodland at first base for the double play. CF Kevin Mahar then bounced to short to seal the game.
Time of game was 2:14 and the paid attendance was 6,613.
With this four-game series tied at 1-1, the Travs have RHP Jose Arredondo (2-1, 6.10 ERA) pitching against Frisco LHP Daniel Haigwood (1-1, 4.39 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
