Springfield Cardinals News Release
Nick Stavinoha and Iker Franco each had a three-run homer in the first inning, as the Springfield Cardinals hammered the Midland RockHounds by a score of 7-2 on Monday night at Hammons Field.
After giving up two runs in the first inning, Cards' starter Mike Parisi settled down and went on to pitch a great game. The RockHounds tallied twice in the first inning, taking advantage of a catcher's interference call on Iker Franco. Brian Stavisky's RBI single knocked in the first run, as Mark Kiger scored to make it 1-0. With Ronnie Merrill at third, Parisi uncorked a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
It was all Cardinals after that, as Springfield scored the game's next seven runs. After Mike McCoy and Reid Gorecki opened the bottom of the first inning with consecutive singles, Nick Stavinoha blasted his tenth home run of the year to left-center field, giving the Cards lead for good at 3-2. Later in the first, with two outs and two men on base, Iker Franco swatted his career-best eighth home run of the year to left field, capping a six-run inning to make it 6-2.
Nick Stavinoha's third hit of the game, a two-out single in the fourth, chased home Kevin Estrada to give Springfield a 7-2 advantage over Midland starter Michael Rogers (0-2).
After Parisi allowed his second hit of the game, three batters into the contest, he would go on to work the next 5 2/3 innings without surrendering a hit. At one point, Parisi retired 11 in a row, leaving after a two-out walk in the eighth. Parisi allowed two runs, just one earned, on only three hits. In winning his third straight decision, Parisi (8-5) struck out eight and walked four.
Stavinoha finished the night 3-3 with four RBIs, taking over the team lead with 62.
Reliever Troy Cate, who retired the only six hitters he faced in earning the win in his Springfield debut on Saturday, retired all four RockHounds he faced on Monday night to finish the game.
Springfield improves to 60-59 overall with the win, now 21-30 in the second half. The Cards will send Jordan Pals (7-7) to the hill on Tuesday night, as Midland will counter with Kevin Olsen (3-1). Fans coming to Tuesday's game will receive a free Medium Drink Token from our friends at Sonic. Gates open at 6:10pm and game time is 7:10pm. Tickets are available for the current home stand by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
