Burlington Bees News Release
Grand Rapids, MI (July 25, 2005) - RHP Patrick Green allowed just one run in seven innings and earned his third straight winning decision as the Burlington Bees (20-11, 54-47) beat the West Michigan Whitecaps (17-14, 50-51) 5-1 at Fifth Third Ballpark tonight for the team's eleventh consecutive win. After the game, Green (6-7) was promoted to High Desert in the California League to fill the spot in the Maverick's starting rotation left open when former Bee Dusty Hughes went down with an injury. The Bees have now won five in a row on the road as part of this streak and improve to 25-25 away from Community Field.
The Bees got on the board first in the top of the second inning. With Brian McFall at second and two outs, Eddie Solis belted a two-run homer to left off of Whitecaps' starter Josh Kauten and the Bees led 2-0. In the top of the third, Ed Lucas, Damaso Espino, and Rusty Brown delivered consecutive two-out singles to produce another run and extend the lead to 3-0. In the top of the fourth, Kenard Springer led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a base hit by Solis, and scored as Darwinson Salazar beat out a possible double play for an RBI. Kauten (4-2) came out after just four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out five. He suffered his first loss since April 26th. Kevin Ardoin pitched three shutout innings in relief. The Bees added an unearned insurance run against Matt Righter in the eighth. Lucas singled, moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt by the catcher Dusty Ryan, moved to third on a groundout by Espino, and scored on a two-out single by McFall. The hit snapped a five-game hitless streak for McFall.
Green allowed six hits and one walk while striking out five in his seven innings. The Bees have won each of his last four starts and are 11-7 when he takes the mound this year. Kraig Schambough allowed a hit in a scoreless eighth. Chad Blackwell allowed an infield single in the ninth, but left the runner stranded as he caught Ryan looking on strike three to end the game in a non-save situation.
The Bees will send RH Justin Sherman (3-3, 2.30) to the mound tomorrow night in search of the team's twelfth straight win in game two of this series at Fifth Third Ballpark. The Whitecaps will counter with RH Dallas Trahen (5-8, 3.27). The game will start at 6:00 Central time and will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:40.
