Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Arizona Fall League officials have released the coaching staffs for the 2005 season and current Cedar Rapids pitching coach Kernan Ronan will be one of six pitching coaches serving league entries. Ronan will act as pitching coach for the Surprise Scorpions, a squad comprised of prospects from five organizations, including the Angels.

This will be Ronan's first stint as an instructor in the six-team fall league. The assignment couldn't work out any better for the longtime mentor as he will be able to spend time with his wife, Diane, who lives in nearby Phoenix.

Ronan, a former minor league pitcher in the San Francisco Giants system, is currently in his 17th season as a pitching coach for the California/Anaheim/Los Angeles organization. The 2005 season brought Ronan's first assignment to Cedar Rapids and the Midwest League.

The Arizona Fall League consists of six teams owned and operated by the 30 Major League Baseball teams. The league began play in 1992 and has served as a showcase for major league prospects ever since. Each organization has a limited number of roster spots on one of the league's teams and usually sends its top prospects to fill out the squad.

Thirty-seven former AFL coaches have gone on to reach the big league ranks since the league was started.
