Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Despite the efforts of Kendall Graveman, the Lansing Lugnuts (3-6) dropped their third straight game on Saturday at Cooley Law School Stadium, falling 5-3 to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (6-3).
The win for Cedar Rapids marked its second late-game come-from-behind victory in less than 24 hours, with a four-run ninth-inning rally defeating the Lugnuts on Friday night.
With a 3-1 lead heading into the eighth inning, Lansing turned to reliever Griffin Murphy (BS, 1)(Loss, 1-1), but an error by second baseman Jason Leblebijian helped set up a three-run, two-out rally by the Kernels. Cedar Rapids second baseman Tanner Vavra tied the game with a two-run double and was eventually brought in to score on a double by Zack Larson.
The Lugnuts knocked around Minnesota Twins No. 4 prospect and Cedar Rapids starter Kohl Stewart in the third inning, touching up the Texan for three runs. Matt Dean hit a two-run single up the middle to put the Lugnuts on the board, and Mitch Nay followed with a double to score Leblebijian.
Lansing starter Graveman put together another excellent start, tossing a career-high seven innings and allowing just one run on three hits. The former Mississippi State Bulldog set a new career high with seven strikeouts and did not walk any Kernel batters.
A run scored in the sixth inning brought an end to a ten-inning scoreless streak by Graveman to open the 2014 season.
Brandon Bixler (Win, 1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning for Cedar Rapids. Brandon Peterson (Save, 1) closed out the final two innings.
Dean extended his hitting streak to six games with a two-hit afternoon. The Lansing third baseman is hitting .361 for the season.
Cedar Rapids will look to pick up a three-game road sweep against Lansing on Sunday afternoon. Right-handed pitcher Tom Robson (0-0, 6.75 ERA) will start for the Lugnuts, and righty Felix Jorge (0-1, 9.00) will be on the mound for the Kernels. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. on a Kids Day presented by Delta Dental, featuring Kids Run the Bases after the game.
