Kane County Wins 9-8

Lake County Captains News Release


(Geneva, IL)- Jacob Rogers blasted a three-run homer to center field in the top of the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Cougars past the Captains by a final of 9-8. At the time, the three run homer put Kane County (6-3) up 8-5. David Bote followed up with a solo shot and the back-to-back homers put the Cougars up 9-5. Lake County (4-5) has lost three straight.

Kane County scored first. In the bottom of the first inning, Carlos Penalver reached on an error, stole second and took third on another error. Ben Carhart doubled Penalver home and the score was 1-0. Yasiel Balaguert singled him home. Balaguert now has 10 RBI's on the young campaign. The score was 2-0.

Lake County scored in the top of the third inning. With one out, Claudio Bautista doubled. He later moved to third on a ground out. Bautista scored on a wild pitch and the score was 2-1.

Kane County scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Cougar Catcher Will Remillard was hit by a pitch, Carlos Penalver then singled. Yasiel Balaguert singled home Remillard and Penalver came in on the throw. Balaguert came into score on a RBI double from Jacob Rogers and the score was 5-1.

Lake County tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. The first three hitters walked and then Grant Fink doubled home two. With the score 5-4, Richard Stock singled to right field and Fink scored to even the score at 5-5.

The Captains trailed 9-5 headed to the ninth, and quickly cut into the lead. Grant Fink walked to begin the frame and scored on a Richard Stock double. Paul Hendrix followed Stock with a two run homer over the left-center field fence and the score was 9-8. That turned out to be the final score.

RHP Adam Plutko (0-0) got the start for Lake County and did not factor in the decision. Plutko pitched four and two thirds innings and allowed five hits and five runs. Four of the runs were earned. Plutko did not walk a batter while striking out six. Kenny Mathews (1-1) took the loss after pitching one and two thirds innings in relief. Mathews allowed one hit, two earned runs, and two walks. Trevor Frank allowed two homeruns in his one and two thirds innings of relief. Frank allowed a total of three hits, two earned runs, and he struck out four.

The Cougars RHP Juan Paniagua (0-0) started and did not get a decision. Paniagua pitched four innings, two hits, one earned run, four walks and he struck out six. The Cougar bullpen had four relief pitchers enter the game. The win went to Josh Davis (1-0). Davis pitched two innings allowing four hits and one earned run.

The Captains will remain to Geneva, Illinois on Sunday to take on the Kane County Cougars in the finale of a three game series. RHP Mitch Brown (0-0, 1.93) will start for the Captains and the Cougars have not announced a starting pitcher yet for the ballgame. First Pitch is at 2:00 PM from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
