Dayton Dragons News Release
Burlington, Iowa - Dayton's Sebastian Elizalde collected four hits and scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning on a wild pitch to lift the Dayton Dragons to a 7-6 victory over the Burlington Bees on Saturday night. The win was the Dragons fourth straight and improved their record to 6-3.
Elizalde double off the center field fence with one out in the top of the 10th inning and took advantage of a pair of wild pitches from Burlington reliever Alan Busenitz to score and give the Dragons the lead. Dayton reliever Scott Brattvet issued a lead-off walk to start the bottom of the 10th but got a ground ball double play on his next pitch and then an shallow pop up to close out the Dragons first extra inning game of the season.
The Dragons got the scoring started in the top of the third inning when Tanner Rahier lined a double to the gap in left-center field, advanced to third on Brandon Dailey's sacrifice, and scored on Jamodrick McGruder's groundout to shortstop to make it 1-0.
The Dragons added two more runs in the fourth. Phillip Ervin singled to left with one out and went from first to third on a wild pick-off throw. Sebastian Elizalde singled to center to drive in Ervin. Elizalde eventually scored with two outs on a line drive single to right by Rahier to make it 3-0.
The Bees scored three in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Mark Shannon belted a solo home run to start the inning and Ranyelmy Mendoza hit a two-run homer with two outs to tie the game.
The Dragons regained the lead briefly in the top of the seventh when Beau Amaral drilled a three-run home run to left field, his first of the year. But Burlington immediately tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, getting a two-run home run from Chad Hinshaw to draw even.
Dragons starting pitcher Amir Garrett worked the first five and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs with one walk and seven strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision.
Dragons reliever Ryan Kemp, returning to the mound for the first time since 2012 after undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery, worked two-thirds of an inning and allowed three runs on four hits with a strikeout. Layne Somsen replaced Kemp and was outstanding, striking out six over two and one-third scoreless innings. Scott Brattvet (1-0) recorded the final four outs for the win, allowing only a walk.
For the third straight night, the Dragons established a new season high in hits, finishing with 12. Along with Elizalde's four, Rahier had three hits, scored two runs, and drove in one.
The Dragons close out a six-game road trip in Burlington on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. (EDT). Daniel Wright (0-0, 0.00) will make his first start for Dayton after two relief appearances. Wright has replaced injured pitcher Junior Morillo in the starting rotation. Burlington will send Harrison Cooney (1-0, 0.00) to the mound. The Dragons return home on Monday, April 14 when they host the Clinton Lumber Kings in the start of a three-game series. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.
