Gratchev Sets ECHL Record in Jackals' 5-3 Loss to Nailers

Wheeling, W.V. - Maxime Gratchev set an ECHL record with a goal four seconds into the third period in the Elmira Jackals' 5-3 loss to the Wheeling Nailers on Tuesday afternoon at WesBanco Arena. The goal was the quickest ever to start a period in the history of the league, breaking the previous mark of five seconds.

Mario Larocque one-timed a feed from Craig Rivet past Nailers goaltender Patrick Killeen with Elmira on a five-on-three power play to give the Jackals a 1-0 lead at 9:19.

Ben Farrer drove home a centering pass from Zack Torquato to tie the game, 1-1, at 19:23 of the opening period.

Chris Barton took a pass from Cody Chupp from the right corner and banged a puck home from the slot to give the Nailers their first lead, 2-1, at 5:45 of the second.

Just 21 seconds later, Christiaan Minella redirected in a shot by Scooter Vaughan past Elmira netminder Timo Pielmeier to extend the Wheeling lead to 3-1.

Gratchev's record-setting strike came off a faceoff win by Riley Armstrong. The third-year pro from Novosibirsk, Russia sped right into the zone and fired a puck past the glove side of Killeen. The puck went through the net and was ruled a good goal by referee Tom Chimilewski. The tally brought Elmira to within a goal, 3-2.

Moments later though, Chupp was found open in the right circle by Paul Crowder, with Chupp firing the puck in to reclaim the two-goal lead, 4-2, at 2:18.

Kyle Reeds jammed a puck in on a backhand off a rebound from an Evan Stoflet shot, and Elmira jumped back to within one, 4-3, at 8:02.

The Jackals were held scoreless the rest of the way, and Barton's empty netter gave Wheeling an insurance goal at 19:28 to put the Nailers up 5-3.

Pielmeier suffered the loss, making 31 saves on 35 shots and falling to 3-4-0-0. Killeen improved to 4-3-0-0 with a 31-save outing.
