New York Boulders News Release

(Montclair, NJ, May 30) - Keith Brachold's two homers, double, and five RBI were not enough for the Boulders as Bryan Sabatella's sixth-inning grand-slam homer keyed a five-run rally, leading the New Jersey Jackals to a 9-7 decision over the Rockland Boulders at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Boulders had erased a deficit to take a 4-3 lead before the hosts rallied for their second straight win in the three-game set.

As they did the evening before, New Jersey broke on top in the first when Francisco Carabello's double to right plated the first marker. It continued the pattern that both teams have followed in which the Jackals have scored early, while Rockland has not yet posted the first run in any of their 12 contests this season. In the second, a Jeff Lanning fly out behind second base allowed Danny Santiestiban to move to third, and the long throw got away, allowing Santiestiban to come home, putting the Jackals up 2-0 on an unearned run off Rockland starter Pat Moran.

In the top of the third the visitors would battle back as Qualon Millender recorded his team's first hit, was balked to second by starter Matt Chico, and advanced on a Cole Kraft grounder. Matt Nandin attempted a squeeze - Millender was caught in a rundown but was interfered with scoring the run. Nandin was then picked off second, which was significant when Brachold followed with a solo homer, his fourth of the year, to tie the score.

Boulders took lead in fifth, in a bizarre sequence. After an infield hit by Chris Valencia, the return throw to the mound by Caraballo got away, allowing Valencia to advance to second. Nandin followed with two-out RBI single up the middle to tie the score. Rockland grabbed its first lead of the day at 4-3 when Brachold stroked an RBI double.

Pat Moran was chased in sixth when the Jackals put runners on, and with Garret Johnson pitching in relief Santiestiban singled in Nick Giarraputo to tie the score. It appeared as though Rockland would escape further damage but Brian Sabatella's two-out grand slam gave New Jersey a cushion at, 8-4. They added another and appeared in cruise control until Brachold crashed his second homer of the afternoon, a three-run shot that accounted for the final score.

These teams wrap up the three-game set tomorrow, Thursday May 31, in a 7:05 start. The Boulders return to Provident Bank Park for a three-game series against the defending league champ Quebec Capitales, Friday through Sunday, June 1 through 3.
