Worcester 2, Newark 1 (Completion of suspended game from May 29)
In a completion of a game suspended due to rain last night, the Tornadoes walked off with a win over the Bears, 2-1. With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, C Chris Torres (pictured), pinch hitting for C Alex Trezza, belted the first pitch he saw over the wall to win the game for Worcester. The suspended game was dominated by the pitching staffs. Each starting pitcher allowed one run on three hits over eight innings. Newark's starter, RHP Mike Ness, struck out seven and Worcester's RHP Kevin Cooper fanned nine. Because the game was suspended, however, neither starter came back to pitch today, so neither got the decision. RHP Mike Mullen earned the relief win for the Tornadoes.
Newark 7, Worcester 4
Three consecutive miscues by Worcester's battery broke a 4-4 tie and gave the Bears a two-run lead in the top of the seventh. After Newark SS Alex Bardeguez doubled and 1B Daryle Ward walked, two wild pitches and a passed ball brought both the runners home. The Bears added one more run in the ninth on a ground-rule double by 3B Juan Martinez to secure the win. Bardeguez and C Dan Coury turned in multi-hit games for Newark. Bardeguez went 2-4 with two runs scored. Coury led the club with a 3-for-4 afternoon, two RBI and two runs scored. RHP Damian Sequen picked up the win in 1.1 innings of relief. RHP Jorge Vasquez earned his league-leading sixth consecutive save.
New Jersey 9, Rockland 7
Bryan Sabatella's sixth inning grand slam broke a 4-4 tie and sent the Jackals to a 9-7 victory over Rockland. The Boulders mounted a comeback in the ninth inning, but could not overcome the deficit set by Sabatella and Nick Giarraputo. With a 3-for-4 afternoon that included an RBI double and a home run, Giarraputo raised his season average to .500. Keith Brachold led Rockland's offense. He went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and five RBI. LHP Jeff Gogal got the win in relief for the Jackals.
