Can-Am New Jersey Jackals

Jackals Hold off Boulders

May 30, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release

Bryan Sabatella's opposite field grand slam in the sixth put the Jackals up for good.

Behind Matt Chico, the Jackals offense was strong for the second straight game. A Rockland Boulders three-run ninth inning rally fell short, as the Jackals held on to the 9-7 victory. They improve to 7-5 on the season, dropping the Boulders to 4-8

The Jackals built a three-inning picket fence to begin the game - Francisco Caraballo singled in Gaetano Giunta in the first, Danny Santiesteban scored on a 2B Ryan Mollica error in the second, and Nick Giarraputo's single brought home Bryan Sabatella.

Giarraputo was 3-4 at the plate today, boosting his average back up to .500 (20-40). He currently holds the Jackals' Triple Crown with 16 RBIs, and is tied for first in home runs with four (Ángel Berroa).

Sabatella's aforementioned grand slam put the Jackals up 8-4, a lead they would never relinquish.

Jackals starter Matt Chico allowed four runs in five innings. Boulders starter Pat Moran allowed six runs in five-plus innings. He allowed only three earned runs in 17 innings (two starts) coming into today.

Pittsfields' 2011 home run leader Keith Brachold hit two today for the Boulders, giving him a team-leading five. He was 3-4 with five RBIs and a stolen base.

The Jackals try to sweep the series tomorrow when they send Steve Fox (2-0, 4.09 ERA) to the hill. Fox is coming off a six-inning, one-hit performance against the Lincoln Saltdogs. The Boulders will look to Julian Sampson (2-0, 1.50 ERA) to give the Boulders their first win of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.

The forecast says 81 and sunny.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434. Notes

Jackals designated hitter Steve Caseres was ejected in the sixth. His replacement Roberto Ramos picked up his first RBI of the season on a Baltimore chop up the middle in the seventh... Gaetano Giunta extended his hitting streak to nine with a single to right field in the first. He has scored all six times he has reached base in the first inning...
