Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The Worcester Tornadoes couldn't carry over their momentum from the resumption of Tuesday's game, as the Newark Bears led for all but half an inning Wednesday in a 7-4 affair.
Backup catcher Dan Coury continued his blazing hot start to the season, going 3-for-4 with two RBI extra-base hits. Coury knotted his first home run of the season and added an RBI double, a single and a walk to bump his average to .600 on the season.
The Tornadoes backup catcher Alex Torres had a fantastic game as well. As Torres went 3-for-4 with a home run, after recording his first hit of the season with a walk-off home run to end the resumption of Tuesday night's game.
Reliever Damien Sequen earned the victory for the Bears, going one-and-a-third innings allowing just two walks in relief of Brian Parker. Parker was strong early but eventually gave up four earned runs over five-and-a-third innings on 11 hits. Jorge Vasquez picked up his league-leading sixth save for the Bears, striking out three of the five batters he faced.
Lefty Kyle Regnault picked up the loss, as he allowed two runs, one earned in a third-of-an-inning. The reliever gave up his first runs this year, after allowing Alex Bardeguez and Daryle Ward to reach base to lead off the seventh. Reliever Mike Mullen let both inherited runners score, as he struggled with his command, throwing two wild pitches and having a third pitch reach the backstop on a passed ball.
Phil Negus got off to a slow start, giving up three runs on four hits in his first two innings, before finishing with five-and-two-thirds innings with four earned runs. Negus struck out eight Bears batters.
The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings behind three doubles and four total hits. Quentin Davis, Ward and Coury all blasted doubles out to right field to give the Bears early edge.
Worcester cut the deficit to one run, when Jerod Edmondson crushed a home run to right field to drive in Brandon Pinckney. After the teams traded a pair of runs in the fourth, the Tornadoes tied the game at four in the sixth. Johnny Welch belted a double and Torres followed with a single to move him to third. Brendon Kelliher followed with a short sacrifice fly to right field, but Torres was left stranded when Sequen entered.
The Bears responded with two runs in the seventh to grab the lead back, when Mullen entered the game and struggled with his command. After the first two hitters reached base, both Bears came around to score without the ball hitting out of the infield. Newark added on a run in the ninth inning on a Juan Martinez double to make it 7-4.
Worcester would bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Nick Salotti and Welch both stuck out with two men on. The Tornadoes are back in action Thursday morning at 11:05 a.m. with Zach Zuercher taking the mound. Check out the action on ustream.tv with the Tornadoes Pregame Show beginning at 10:50.
