
Granato Racks Up Can-Am League Hardware

Cheshire, Conn. - PA-SportsTicker, the official statistician of the Can-Am League, has selected Atlantic City Surf SS Anthony Granato as the league's Teamline Direct Player of the Week for the week of August 25-31, as well as the B45 Player of the Month for August.
In 29 August games, Granato hit .391 with 31 RBI, 11 home runs, eight doubles, a .478 on-base percentage and a .765 slugging percentage to help the Surf clinch a Can-Am League playoff berth for the second consecutive season. The Toronto native had hits in 25 games, including 13 multiple-hit contests, raising his average from .288 at the beginning of the month to .321 currently. He also goes into tonight's season finale with a 12-game hitting streak.
During the past week, Granato hit a sizzling .563 with five home runs, 11 RBI, 13 runs scored and a 1.156 slugging percentage in eight games. In the Surf's doubleheader sweep at Nashua on Monday, he combined to go 5-for-5 with two home runs and three runs scored, while he went 3-for-4 with a sixth-inning, two-run dinger and another three runs in the squad's 7-2 victory over Sussex on Sunday night.
Currently, Granato is ninth in the Can-Am League in batting average, second with 82 runs scored, third with 30 stolen bases and 28 doubles, and fourth with four triples and a .429 on-base percentage. The 27-year-old is in his fifth professional season, and his second in Atlantic City. Signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Chicago Cubs in 2004, he spent two seasons in the Cubs' system and one in the Colorado Rockies' organization. Last season, Granato hit .329 with the Surf, fifth-best in the league, and led the league in runs scored (77) and on-base percentage (.458).
Granato and the Surf start the best-of-five first round of the Can-Am League playoffs on Wednesday, with the first two games of the series at Quebec before the Capitales return to Atlantic City on Friday for Game 3, as well as Games 4 and 5 on Saturday and Sunday if necessary.
In addition, Sussex RHP Gary Galvez was named the league's Pitcher of the Week and Pitcher of the Month. The native of Cuba hurled eight shutout innings in the Skyhawks' 3-1 victory over New Jersey on Wednesday, allowing only one walk and three hits while striking out seven batters. For the month, Galvez was a perfect 3-0 in five starts with a 1.45 ERA. In 31 innings pitched, he gave up five earned runs, five walks and 19 hits while punching out 28 hitters.
