July 6, 2023 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
NJ/NY Gotham FC News Release
HARRISON, NJ - Gotham FC took advantage of the opening of the International Transfer Window, as the club proudly announced today that Spain international midfielder Maitane López has signed a two-year contract through 2024 with an option year.
Born in Murcia, Spain, López spent most of her life in Mallorca before embarking on a professional playing career.
As a pro competing in Liga F, the Primera División de la Liga de Fútbol Femenino, she has featured for 11 seasons and scored 42 goals. López has appeared for prominent clubs that include Collerense, Levante UD, Real Sociedad de Fútbol, and most recently with Club Atlético de Madrid Féminas, one of the top clubs in Spain and in Europe.
"The NWSL is a highly competitive league, and I am thrilled to be offered a chance to be a part of the club's journey," said López. "I can't wait to meet our fans and give my all for the club and city."
The midfielder has been one of the most important players for Atlético de Madrid, earning significant minutes any time she has been available for selection.
During the 2022/2023 season, López made 18 appearances, scored a goal, and helped Atlético de Madrid win the 2022/2023 Copa de la Reina, an annual cup competition for Spanish women's teams organized by the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
On the international scene, López was a part of Spain's first ever victory over the U.S. Women's National Team. She became a U-17 European Champion and led the U-19s to a runner-up finish in the Euros.
"Maitane López is a player with strong technical ability and international experience who will be a fantastic addition to team," said Gotham FC General Manager and Head of Soccer Operations Yael Averbuch West.
López will be available for roster selection for this weekend's Gotham FC vs. Portland Thorns home match at Red Bull Arena.
