Ekic Called up by Bosnia and Herzegovina for International Friendlies
July 6, 2023 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
Racing Louisville FC News Release
Racing Louisville FC forward Emina Ekic has been called up to represent the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team for friendlies this month against Greece and Hungary.
Ekic is eligible to represent Bosnia through both of her parents, who were born in Bosnia, and the news marks the Louisville native's first senior national call-up. She previously represented the United States at the under-23 level in 2019.
"Once I got drafted out of college, the focus turned to my professional career and international soccer," Ekic said. "Since 2021, I have been trying to decide what I want to do. After sitting on it for two years, I really wanted to represent the country my family is from. It feels at home."
Ekic missed the first part of the 2023 NWSL season after suffering a broken ankle while on loan in Australia during the NWSL and Racing Louisville offseason. Back with Racing this spring, she has made two appearances, coming on as a substitute in Louisville's 2-2 draw at OL Reign this past Saturday and in a 3-0 win over the Houston Dash on June 14 in the UKG NWSL Challenge Cup.
Last year, Ekic appeared in 19 regular-season matches in her second season in the league, starting five. She scored three goals across all competitions. Her free-kick goal in the Challenge Cup was a late equalizer against the Chicago Red Stars.
Over her three-year professional career, Ekic has four goals and two assists in 46 appearances for Racing across all competitions.
Bosnia will play its two friendlies in Hungary, facing Greece on July 15 at the Hungarian Football Federation Training Facility in Telki and Hungary on July 18 at UTE Szusza Ferenc Stadium in Budapest.
"I am super excited," Ekic said. "It's a great opportunity and honor to represent my country at that level. I am just excited that they chose me."
