Gorillas Knock Off Thunder 5-3

November 21, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Gorillas of the Central Hockey League (CHL) won their second game of the year on Wednesday night, beating the Wichita Thunder by a final score of 5-3. The win came the day before Thanksgiving, as the Gorillas prepare for a weekend road trip to face the Colorado Eagles on Friday and Saturday night in Loveland, CO.

Things did not start the Gorillas way however, as they would outshoot the Thunder 12-4 in the first period, and still find themselves down 1-0 after one. Kris Wiebe scored for the Thunder on a turnover in front of goaltender Dan McWhinney at the 5:31 mark of the first.

In the second, it was more of the same as the Thunder opened up a 2-0 lead when Brad Thompson pounced on a turnover right in the slot and beat McWhinney down low for his first goal of the season 7:46 into the second. Amarillo would not go away however, as Bill Vandermeer found his scoring touch again lighting the lamp at the 13:37 mark to Bring the Gorillas to within one. The Gorillas would keep coming strong for the rest of the period, and Shaun Arvai was able to break through for his second goal in two games at 15:31, tying the contest at 2-2 going into the third period.

In period number three, it was Nate Fornataro who would put the Gorillas ahead 3-2 on his first professional goal scored at 3:01. The Defenseman had crept in from the slot and got a feed from behind the net where he was able to beat goalie Jon Horrell. Fornataro let fly a wrist-shot to the far side post and celebrated his first professional point and goal which came seven games into his Gorillas career. Amarillo would have one more lapse before putting away Wichita for good, as McWhinney allowed an Alex Goupil goal at 4:03, just one minute and two seconds after Fornataro's go ahead goal which tied the game once again at 3-3. Amarillo looked to their veteran leader and Chris Lipsett answered the call with a goal at 5:25 to put the Gorillas ahead for good. Lipsett would add an empty-netter before it was all said and done, and the Gorillas secured their second win of the year, and their first in regulation.

Amarillo will face Colorado on Friday and Saturday night in Loveland, CO. Both games are slated to start at 8:05 PM CST, and can be heard on 1010 AM The Canyon.
