Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Hidalgo, TX 1/16/09 - The Amarillo Gorillas dropped their fifth straight game Friday night, as the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees got late heroics to emerge victorious in a 3-1 match at the Dodge Arena.

The game appropriately began with a scoreless first period, as Amarillo netminder Mike Gorman stopped 10 Killer Bee shots to match the 16 shots stopped by Rio Grande Valley goaltender Wylie Rogers. It was a penalty-filled first 20 minutes, with seven penalties called on the two teams combined-the ensuing power plays, however, would yield no results on the scoreboard.

Rio Grande Valley collected the first tally of the game, with Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scoring on a 2-on-1 feed from Jesse Bennefield just 3:24 into the second frame. The 1-0 lead would hold through the second intermission for the Bees, with Rogers turning aside all 10 Gorillas shots on net.

Through the first 14 minutes of the third period, Amarillo remained scoreless as they strove to achieve the tying tally. Finally, at the 14:30 mark of the third, Travis Lisabeth scored on a centering feed from Stuart MacRae to knot the game up at one.

The Killer Bees would prevail with some late heroics, though, as Zak McClellan set up Aaron Lee for a shot at the top of the Amarillo crease. Lee lifted a wrist shot over Gorman's blocker to get the eventual game-winning goal and put the hosts up, 2-1. Evan Rankin added an empty net goal with just 1.2 seconds remaining in the game to cement the victory for Rio Grande Valley.

Gorman (8-13-0) absorbed the loss, despite making 36 saves on 38 shots for Amarillo (10-24-0). Rogers made 36 saves on 37 shots faced to grab the victory. The two teams will be back in action for a 7:35 opening face-off Saturday night at the Dodge Arena-coverage of the game can be heard on 1010 AM "The Canyon" in the Amarillo area, with a free online videocast through the CHL Network (www.nifty-tv.com/chl).
