January 16, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[RAPID CITY, S.D.]-In their first ever game at Rapid City, the Scorpions fell 6-4 to the Rush. The offense kicked into high gear early as the teams combined for six goals in the first period.
The Rush got on the board early as Rich Hansen's initial shot was saved by goaltender Andrew Martin. The puck slid behind him and John Pelle was there to push it in the net.
Less than two minutes later the Scorpions answered on a two-on-one. Chris Robertson delivered a pass to Neil Trimm who scored his 11th goal of the season.
Back came Rapid City as they grabbed a 2-1 lead as Pelle converted on a wrist shot from the point, his second goal of the game. New Mexico answered as Chris Robertson found the back of the net for the 18th time this season.
Rapid City converted on their first power play of the game as Chris Lipsett gave his team back a one goal lead 17:33 into the first period. The lead grew to two when Kyle Sheen lit the lamp 58 seconds later.
The Scorpions came back as Mike MacDonald drew his team within one with his first goal in a New Mexico uniform. The Scorpions tied it up when the other Macdonald, Craig, lit the lamp for the team leading 21st time this season.
The Rush used their second power play chance to get back the edge late in the middle period. Derek LeBlanc found a loose puck in front of the Scorps' net and tickled the twine.
With the teams combining for nine goals in the first 40 minutes, only one goal was scored in the final frame. Brady Olsen converted a breakaway goal with under five minutes to go in regulation.
The same two teams battle tomorrow night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Plaza. Tune into the CHL Network starting at 7:05 p.m. for the live action.
The Scorpions return home on Wednesday, January 21st to face Odessa on $1 Nacho Night. American Cancer Night comes up on Saturday, January 24th. Special jerseys will be worn with a post game auction to benefit the Relay for Life. Both games start at 7:15 p.m.
