Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Amarillo, TX - In a game that was closely played from the opening puck drop, the Amarillo Gorillas pulled out a shootout victory against the New Mexico Scorpions, 5-4, Saturday night in Santa Fe, NM.

Each team scored three goals as New Mexico battled back from two one-goal third period deficits to tie it late in the final frame. With the game tied at four, the teams headed directly to the shootout, with Jason Weitzel scoring the winner for Amarillo. Simon Nielsen, in his first start in a Gorillas uniform, stopped all five Scorpion shootout attempts.

Once again, special teams play factored heavily into the outcome, with a total of 32 penalties assessed in the game. The preseason clash also featured two fights, involving Amarillo's Jan Ouimet and Michael George.

Gordon Bell scored twice and Emery Olauson tallied his second of the preseason in the game, which saw the Gorillas improve to 2-0-0 in exhibition play. The Scorpions fall to 0-1-1 following their second and final preseason affair, which was played in Santa Fe's Genoveva Chavez Community Center.

The Gorillas and Scorpions will match up again October 17 in the first regular season game for both teams. That contest will take place in Rio Rancho, NM with the opening face-off scheduled for 8:10 PM Central Time.
