Lancaster Stormers News Release

They're getting warmer.

After three consecutive two-run losses, the Lancaster Barnstormers were edged by just one, 3-2, by the Long Island Ducks Wednesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Raul Gonzalez singled home the deciding run in the top of the eighth, boosting the Ducks (4-2) to their second straight win in the series. Ray Navarrete opened the inning with a single to left center off Ross Peeples (0-1). Peeples retired Preston Wilson on a shallow fly to center and got Ron Davenport on a soft liner to first, but Vic Rodriguez kept the inning alive with a ground single up the middle. Gonzalez then sliced a line drive that landed barely fair down the right field line, chasing Navarrete home for the 3-2 lead.

Long Island grabbed a 1-0 lead off Zack Parker in the top of the third. Juan Francia hit a one-out topper down the third base line. Lloyd Turner made a slick barehanded pickup, but his hurried throw was off line, and Francia reached on the infield single. Lew Ford followed with a double to right, plating Francia, a former Barnstormer.

Turner and Danny Bravo drew walks from Brad Halsey to open the Barnstormers third. With Jason Perry at the plate, Lancaster executed a double steal. Perry grounded out to drive in Turner, and Ryan Mulhern brought Bravo home with a foul sacrifice fly into the left field bullpen.

Otherwise, the Barnstormers managed seven singles against five Long Island pitchers. None factored in the scoring.

Long Island tied the game in the fourth on a two-out double by Gonzalez and a flare up the middle by Alex Prieto.

Joe Valentine (1-0) recovered from a four-run inning the previous night to earn the win. Bill Simas retired the side in order, two on strikes, in the ninth to pick up his second save of the series and third of the season.

NOTES: Lancaster has held the lead for ½ inning in the last 42...Turner has reached base 11 times in the last five games...He and Bryan Sabatella have made it safely to first in all six games...Amadeo Zazueta had his season opening hit streak snapped at five games...Ken Ray (1-0) will oppose Trey Hodges (0-1) in the series finale at 7:00 on Thursday.
