Gonsolin, Drillers Top Travelers

July 26, 2018 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release

The Tulsa Drillers successfully opened a seven-game road trip Thursday night with a 4-2 win at Arkansas, ending a four-game losing streak. It was just the second victory in the past eight games for the first-place Drillers.

The four runs produced by the Tulsa offense were more than enough for starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin. The right-hander threw seven dominant innings, surrendering just three hits and two runs to the Travelers. He walked 2 batters while striking out 11, matching a season high for a Drillers pitcher.

Gonsolin fell behind 1-0 in the second inning when the Travelers opened the game's scoring courtesy of former Drillers outfielder Joey Curletta's 21st home run of the season.

The Drillers produced all of their offense in the top of the fourth. Singles by Keibert Ruiz and Cael Brockmeyer put runners at first and second, and Wes Darvill followed with a run-scoring double that tied the game at 1-1.

Brockmeyer scored on a fielder's choice ground out and Darvill came home when Arkansas catcher Ryan Scott threw wildly to second base on an attempted steal by Tyler Goeddel. A two-out single by Will Smith plated Goeddel to give Tulsa a 4-1 lead.

The Travelers pulled to within two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Dario Pizzano doubled home Curletta.

They would get no closer as Shea Spitzbarth worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning with two strikeouts.

Stetson Allie pitched around a pair of leadoff walks in the ninth to close out the win. With the tying runs on base, the hard-throwing Allie got a pair of strikeouts before Jacob Scavuzzo made a sliding catch along the left field line to end the game.
