Hounds Rally to Beat Frisco in Extras

July 26, 2018 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

If "all good things must come to an end," then so must at least some NOT so good things!

On a night when Jesus Luzardo's amazing scoreless streak ended on Juremi Profar's solo home run (see below), the RockHounds ended their extra-innings woes, scoring seven times in the 10th for an 11-5 win over the RoughRiders Wednesday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas.

It was the club's first win in seven extra-inning contests under the new protocol.

The clubs were tied at 4-4 after nine, then scored as many runs in the single extra frame. The 'Hounds busted loose, sending 11 men to the plate and getting RBI from six of them (Richie Martin started and finished the scoring with RBI singles).

Nolan Blackwood, too, changed his extra-inning fortunes, pitching the ninth and tenth and allowing only the inherited runner (an unearned run) to score. In his previous three appearances in "overtime," Nolan had allowed 11 of his 20 total earned runs for the season.

In regulation, seven of the eight runs came on the long ball. Seth Brown's 10th of the season put the RockHounds up, 2-0, in the first ... Profar's streak-ending drive made the score 2-1 .... Destin Hood's mammoth shot to left broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth ... and Tyler Ramirez' second homer in as many nights (a 417-foot drive to right-center) tied the game in the eighth.

The 'Hounds, who have won 3-of-4, took the series, 2-games-to-1.

Notables

Eli White (1-for-5, two runs, HBP, SB) has reached base in 22-of-23 games. In that span, Eli is hitting .391 (34-for-87), with nine doubles, two triples, two HR and 12 RBI, adding 17 walks and two HBP for a .491 on-base percentage.

Seth Brown (2-for-6, HR, three RBI) has hit in five straight games (8-for-22, two doubles, triple, HR and six RBI). His three-RBI night gives Seth 65 RBI for the season (corrected), tied for fourth in the Texas League.

Tyler Ramirez went 5-for-11 in the last two games of the series, with a double, two home runs and five RBI.

Richie Martin went 4-for-6 with two runs, two RBI and two steals. He has hit in six straight games (9-for-27, .333) with two doubles, three RBI and two steals. In his last 10 games, Richie is 15-42 (.357), with three doubles, HR, four RBI and five stolen bases).

Jonah Heim had his best game as a RockHound, going 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

Jesus Luzardo

Jesus Luzardo gave up a solo home run to Juremi Profar, leading off the last of the third inning, snapping an amazing streak.

Beginning with the final two-and-two-thirds innings of his June 6 start ... Jesus:

- Did not all a run (earned or unearned) for 28-and-a-third innings

- Did not allow an earned run in 35-and-two-thirds innings

Irony: The last run (it was unearned) Jesus had allowed also came at Dr Pepper Ballpark (June 11).

He has allowed three runs (two earned) in his last eight starts, covering 41.0 innings (a 0.44 ERA)

Jesus has struck out 84 batters in 73.2 IP, while walking 17, a ratio of nearly five-to-one.

He remains eight innings shy of qualifying among the Texas League leaders (81.2 IP minimum). If he did, his 2.32 ERA would lead the league.

I'm Not Tim Kurkjian Or Anything, Just Sayin' ...

Sometimes "the book" is correct. Jesus Luzardo went 2-0 only twice Wednesday. The second was a four-pitch walk to Luis Mendez in the fifth. The first was a 2-0 count to Juremi Profar, who ripped the 2-0 delivery out to left-center, snapping the lefty's remarkable streak.
