Chanclas Drop Close One in Series Opener
July 26, 2018 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
The Flying Chanclas de San Antonio dropped a 6-5 nail-biter to Frisco Thursday night in front of 6,165 at Wolff Stadium
In the much-anticipated series opener, the RoughRiders sprung out to a 2-0 lead in the first against right-hander Cal Quantrill with a double from Preston Beck and a single from Luis Yander La O.
The Flying Chanclas got one of those runs back in the home half against lefty Yohander Mendez when Kyle Overstreet drove in Josh Naylor with a double to right.
An inning later, Nick Schulz drew the Chanclas even with his fifth dinger of the season, a solo blast to right.
After Frisco took the lead in the third with a La O single, San Antonio continued the seesaw affair in the fourth as Webster Rivas knotted the game at three with a double to right.
Quantrill left the game after five with the score still tied at three. The former Stanford University star turned in a solid outing, scattering seven hits and not issuing a free pass, while punching out six.
The Chanclas took their first lead of the night in a rather eventful sixth inning. The frame featured a sky high infield single from Schulz that was lost in the lights by third baseman Juremi Profar. The fortunate Schulz single sent Austin Allen from first to third on the play. That advancement proved costly for Mendez, who was called for a balk during the next at-bat, allowing Allen to score. Mendez would quickly be ejected for arguing with first base umpire Jose Matamoros.
But as was the case for much of Thursday, the score would not remain the same for long. Frisco promptly tied the game at four in the seventh with Destin Hood's solo homer to left off reliever Chris Huffman. Later in the frame, the RoughRiders took a 5-4 lead with Michael De Leon's single to right center.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Flying Chanclas drew even with Ty France's RBI-single to right off reliever Samir Vivas.
However, in the eighth, Frisco took the lead for good when La O scored from third on an Eric Yardley (2-2) wild pitch.
Vivas (1-0) kept the Chanclas off the board in the eighth before Reed Garrett (14th save) followed suit in the ninth to move Frisco (20-14, 44-60) into a first place tie with Corpus Christi (20-14, 63-40). The Chanclas remain just a half game out of first.
San Antonio (19-14, 61-42) continues its four-game series with Frisco Friday at 7:05 PM. The first 1,500 fans to enter The Wolff will receive a FREE Final Season in the Texas League Cap courtesy of Baird Foundation & Repair. Lake Bachar (1-4, 5.25) will take the hill for the Missions, while the "Riders counter with fellow righty Jonathan Hernandez (2-3, 5.97).
