Cards Sweep Drillers with Extra-Innings Win
July 26, 2018 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Tulsa Drillers hopes of salvaging a win in their three-game series with the Springfield Cardinals came to an end Wednesday night on a two-out, bloop single by Andy Young in the top of the tenth. Young's timely hit broke a tie and help propel the Cards to a 5-2 win and a three-game sweep over the first-place Drillers at ONEOK Field.
Despite the sweep, Tulsa remains three games in front of second-place Arkansas in the North Division standings of the Texas League.
The Cardinals got the scoring started in Wednesday's finale in the top of the third. With one out, Randy Arozarena doubled off the right-center wall. Evan Mendoza followed with an RBI single to bring home the first run of the game.
This would be the only run that Drillers starting pitcher Kyle Lobstein would surrender in his five innings of work.
The Drillers broke through with a run in the bottom of the fifth to catch the Cardinals. Errol Robinson started the rally with a groundball to shortstop that was over-thrown to first base, allowing Robinson to reach. After he advanced to second on a wild pitch, Keibert Ruiz hit a ball that found its way through the left side of the infield to even things up at 1-1.
A huge opportunity for the Drillers was squandered in the bottom of the seventh. D.J. Peters and Wes Darvill singled, and Robinson walked to load the bases with no outs. But the next three Drillers were retired, stranding all three runners.
The score remained 1-1 until the top of the tenth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Young found a patch of grass in shallow right field that brought home two runs for Springfield. Victor Roache and Jeremy Martinez followed with two more singles to extend the Cardinals lead to 5-1.
The Drillers managed to get a run in the bottom of the tenth, but it was not enough as the Cardinals finished off the 5-2 win and the series sweep.
