Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Volcanoes sent a sellout crowd of 4,303 home happy Saturday night, defeating the Tri-City Dust Devils 9-3 at Volcanoes Stadium.
Dressed in their patriotic-themed jerseys, the Volcanoes tallied nine runs on ten hits - including a six-run fourth inning - as they began the homestand with a victory.
The Volcanoes scratched across a run in the first to take an early lead. Ronnie Jebavy led off the game with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Steven Duggar later grounded out to second, allowing Jebavy to score and put Salem-Keizer out in front.
Tri-City used some aggressive base running to tie things up in the fourth. Jose Carlos Urena hustled out a one-out double, sliding just by shortstop C.J. Hinojosa's glove. Urena then moved up to third on a groundout and came in to score when Volcanoes starter Logan Webb (2-1, 5.21 ERA) threw a wild pitch by his catcher, tying the game at 1-1.
The tie was only temporary, however, as the Volcanoes came roaring back the next half inning. Salem-Keizer sent 11 men to the plate and scored six runs - five of which coming with two outs. With one out in the frame, seven of eight men reached, including a stretch of four consecutive RBI singles. The inning was Salem-Keizer's most productive of the season and pushed the Volcanoes out to a 7-1 lead.
Miguel Gomez tacked on some insurance runs in the sixth, blasting a two-run home run over the left field fence. Every Volcanoes batter reached in the contest, and eight of nine scored a run.
Webb tossed a gem, allowing only one run on three hits in five innings of work. The 18-year-old bounced back from a rough first inning, hitting the Dust Devils' leadoff man with the first pitch he threw. He worked around three base runners in the frame and went on to allow only three more through the rest of his outing.
The Dust Devils scored a pair of runs in the seventh but the rally fell short as Salem-Keizer locked down its eighth victory of the season. Trey Wingenter (0-1, 19.06 ERA) took the loss.
