Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

That hole the Winnipeg Goldeyes currently find themselves in continues to get deeper.

The Goldeyes (42-44) couldn't find traction Monday night and lost 6-4 to the Rockford RiverHawks (43-44) before 5,568 fans at Canwest Park.

The loss is a sour start to a seven-day, nine-game home stand for the Fish.

With the game deadlocked 2-2, Rockford used three singles to score Travis Scott and then Jono Brooks hit a three-run home run to give the RiverHawks a 6-2 lead in the sixth inning.

Winnipeg responded in the bottom of the sixth when newcomer Donzell McDonald hit a solo home run - his first in the Northern League.

Kevin West added a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, but Winnipeg fell two runs short.

The Goldeyes outhit Rockford 10-7 in the game, but stranded 11 runners, including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth inning.

Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida was cruising along until the four-run sixth inning he surrendered. He took the loss, but did strikeout seven RiverHawks in the outing. Sean Gregory, Zach Baldwin and Bobby Korecky combined to sit down the RiverHawks in order in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

Kyle Ruwe earned the win by going five innings, allowing just two runs and striking out five.

Winnipeg has slipped into sixth place in the Northern League with the loss, half a game back of Rockford and two and a half games behind the Joliet JackHammers for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Northern League.

The Goldeyes and RiverHawks continue this three-game series Tuesday night at Canwest Park. Game time is 7 p.m. and great seats are available by visiting any Ticketmaster location or by calling 780-3333.
