Mena, Shortell Combine to Lead JackHammers Past Flyers

JOLIET, IL - Roberto Mena tied a season high with three runs batted in and Rory Shortell tossed seven solid frames as the Joliet JackHammers (45-42) soared past the Schaumburg Flyers (34-53) 4-3 Monday night at Silver Cross Field. It was the third straight victory for Joliet, their longest winning streak in the second half.

Brad Correll collected three more hits and started the sixth inning with a triple off Ryan Gehring (3-10). After Jon Nelson struck out, Freddie Thon singled against a drawn in infield to snap a 3-3 tie and put the JackHammers up for good.

Shortell (3-8) scattered ten hits over seven innings, allowing three runs while striking out four in the process. The right-hander allowed two first inning runs before settling down. Richard Mercado knocked home two with a single after Travis Brown and Kit Pellow singled.

Mena struck for the first time in the second, lining a home run beyond the wall in left field to tie the game at two. The second baseman would give Joliet their first lead then in the fourth. Thon doubled to left center and Mena slapped a single up the middle with two away for a 3-2 advantage.

The Flyers tied the game in the sixth on a Ron Bourquin single, scoring Pellow who doubled to start the inning against Shortell.

Schaumburg put two on in the eighth and ninth innings against William Jackel, but the reliever got out of both jams to earn his second save. Brown lined a double down the right field line with one out in the ninth. Jackel intentionally walked Mario Delgado after Pellow popped out. Jeff Brooks lined out to Mena for the 4-3 final.

Gehring allowed all four runs on ten hits in the defeat, tossing seven frames with two strikeouts.

Mena and Correll each had three hits with Mena knocking home three runs. Thon collected a multi-hit game with two hits and drove in his 68th run of the season.

The JackHammers and Flyers continue their four game series tomorrow night in Joliet. Dustin Glant (8-5) and Bear Bay (7-5) is the starting pitching matchup. Game time is set for 6:10 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
