Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

FARGO, ND - Lake County's Cody Straight trotted home with the winning run in the eighth inning after a wild pitch by Fargo-Moorhead's Casey Hoorelbeke as the Fielders edged the RedHawks 4-3 on Monday night at Newman Outdoor Field.

Lake County (38-50) rallied from an early deficit as Fargo-Moorhead scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off Fielders starting pitcher Alec Lewis. RedHawks right fielder Mike Coles led off with a single and came around to score on a one-bagger by Eric Campbell. Campbell would later score on a slow roller to short by Jeremiah Piepkorn and left fielder Jay Cox followed with his eighth home run of the year to make the score 3-0.

The Fielders answered in the top of the second inning. Designated hitter Adam Hale led off the frame with a double down the left field line. Two batters later, center fielder Cody Straight lined a single back up the box to score Hale and make the score 3-1.

Lake County continued to chip away at the RedHawk lead in the fourth inning. Straight singled to left and catcher Anthony Esquer dropped a double just inside the chalk down the right field line to put runners at second and third. Shortstop Guillermo Martinez stepped to the plate and pushed a grounder through the right side of the infield, scoring two and tying the game 3-3.

RedHawk reliever Cory Patton started the eighth inning and allowed the Fielders to load the bases after a pair of walks (one intentional) and a single. Fargo-Moorhead manager Doug Simunic called on Northern League ERA-leader Casey Hoorelbeke, who promptly picked Lake County's Martinez off second base. With runners now at first and third and two outs, Hoorelbeke uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Straight to scamper home with the winning run.

Ryan Falcon (4-3) pitched an inning of scoreless relief to pick up the win for the Fielders. Marco Gonzales recorded his fifth save of the season for Lake County after allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings of work.

Fargo-Moorhead (49-35) got an outstanding effort from starting pitcher T.J. Stanton. The righty threw 116 pitches over 6.0 innings, scattering six hits and allowing three runs. Stanton had a season-high 11 strikeouts for the RedHawks and walked two. Patton (1-1) was saddled with the loss out of the bullpen.

Straight and Martinez each went 2-for-3 at the plate for Lake County. Straight scored a pair of runs and Martinez drove in two.

Coles, Campbell, Cox and Carlo Cota all went 2-for-4 for the RedHawks.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night in the second contest of a three-game set. Lake County will send Roberto Feliciano (1-0, 0.00) to the mound while Fargo-Moorhead has yet to announce a starting pitcher.
