Goldeyes Score Early, Hold On for Win
August 19, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes (41-41) used 14 hits to dispose of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (47-33) 12-7 Thursday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.
Justin Justice and Dee Brown both hit home runs as part of the six-run first inning for the Goldeyes. But the commanding lead would be short lived.
The RedHawks got to Goldeyes starter Stephen Flake in the bottom of the first inning and scored a pair runs. Fargo cut Winnipeg's lead to just a run when it tacked on three more runs in the second.
Unlike their previous two games, the Goldeyes bats were able to produce runs in more than one inning. Winnipeg added a run in the fourth inning when Aharon Eggleston scored on a two-out single by Kevin West. Winnipeg went on to score twice in the sixth, once in the seventh and twice more in the ninth for the blowout win.
Justice, who finished the game with four RBI, hit his second home run of the game in the seventh inning and joins Luis Alen as the only two members of the Goldeyes to hit two home runs in a game this season.
Winnipeg relief pitcher Zach Baldwin entered the game in the third inning and tossed four scoreless innings to earn the win. Billy Weitzman took the loss for Fargo after going just two-thirds of an inning.
Despite the win, Winnipeg remains a half game out of a playoff spot in the Northern League because the fourth-place Joliet JackHammers beat the Kansas City T-Bones 4-2.
The Goldeyes and RedHawks meet again Friday night in Fargo in the second game of this four-game series. Winnipeg will be out to extend its two-game winning streak against the league-leading RedHawks.
