Bay Outduels Cruse in 4-2 'Hammers Victory

JOLIET, IL - Bear Bay allowed an unearned run over 7.1 innings to guide the Joliet JackHammers (42-41) to a 4-2 victory Thursday night over the Kansas City T-Bones (47-35) at Silver Cross Field. The victory keeps the JackHammers in fourth place with 17 games remaining in the regular season.

Joliet broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the seventh off Andrew Cruse (9-5). Freddie Thon picked up the fourth hit for Joliet, doubling to left field to start off the frame. Chris Colton singled to put runners at the corners with nobody out. After Ryan Wehrle struck out, Roberto Mena laid down a bunt to score Thon and reached after Cruse threw the ball over Jim Fasano's head at first base. Joe Billick then followed with a run scoring single to put the 'Hammers up 2-0.

The JackHammers added two more in the eighth, courtesy of two miscues by Fasano. Kevin Rios doubled to lead off the inning against Casey Hodges and moved to third on the first error by Fasano. Brad Correll hit a bouncing ball off of the first baseman's glove to reach base safely. Erik Hamren came out of the bullpen and threw a wild pitch to plate Rios from third. Jon Nelson moved Correll up to third on a groundout to second and Thon hit a ball under the glove of Fasano to score Correll for a 4-1 advantage.

Kansas City mounted a comeback in the ninth, loading the bases with no one out. Griffin Bailey struck out Keith Hernandez, but reached on a wild pitch. Jimmy Mojica and Keanon Simon slapped consecutive singles to load the bases. Jake Blackwood stepped in and promptly hit into a double play with a run scoring on the play. Bailey then retired Rico Washington for preserve the 4-2 final.

Bay won the pitcher's duel, working 7.1 innings allowing the unearned run on eight hits. Bay struck out a season high nine hitters and walked two (one intentional).

The T-Bones picked up the unearned run in the eighth against Bay. Ray Sadler hit a one out single to left and Fasano lined a single in front of Jonathan Wyatt that skipped past the left fielder to score the first Kansas City run. Wes Alsup entered out of the bullpen and retired the next two hitters with the tying run at second in a 2-1 game.

Cruse suffered his fifth loss and first to the JackHammers this season, going 6.2 innings. The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts.

Colton led Joliet with two hits with Thon, Mena and Billick each knocking in a run.

Fasano had three hits for Kansas City with Sadler and Mojica each collecting two base hits.

The JackHammers and T-Bones will continue their four game series tomorrow night in Joliet. Two southpaws will take the bump with Reid Santos (4-5) taking the ball for Kansas City opposite Paul Fagan (0-0) for Joliet. First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.

Joliet is 8-6 overall against Kansas City. - Griffin Bailey moved into third place in the Northern League with his 12th save, allowing one run in the ninth inning - Joliet improved to 19-17 at Silver Cross Field and finish the season with 14 of the final 17 contests at home
