Goldeyes Rally in Eighth
June 20, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes won in exciting fashion tonight, rallying to beat the Joliet JackHammers 6-4 before 5,508 at Canwest Park. With the win, Winnipeg maintains its four-game lead over Schaumburg in the standings.
Joliet opened the scoring off Bear Bay in the second when Freddie Thon led off with his fourth home run of the year. It became 3-0 in the fifth when the JackHammers scored a pair of unearned runs. Andrew Pinckney doubled to lead it off and was sacrificed to second by Wally Backman Jr. Bay fanned Issac Omura for the second out before Adam Klein hit a ground ball that Josh Asanovich booted at second, allowing Pinckney to score. Gary Harris followed with a single to centre. Cory Patton fell down trying to field it, giving the speedy Klein plenty of time to score from first.
Blanked through five, the Goldeyes scored their first runs of the series in the sixth off Rory Shortell. Dustin Richardson and Wes Long singled before Asanovich singled to score Richardson and send Long to third, from where he scored on a Kevin West sacrifice fly. Things stayed that way until the eighth.
With Ryan Paul in for Shortell, Richardson struck out, Long singled and stole second and Asanovich walked. That was it for Paul, as Drew Shetrone entered and promptly walked West to load the bases. Juan Diaz struck out on three pitches for the second out before Patton lined a 3-2 pitch to centre to score Long and Asanovich. Dee Brown followed with a double to left to score West and Patton. The visitors got one back in the ninth off Matt Davis on doubles by Pinckney and Omura but would get no closer.
Jordan Stewart (1-0) was the winner after tossing one-third of an inning of shutout relief. Paul (1-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on a hit and walk in one-plus innings. Davis picked up his league-leading ninth save.
This series continues Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Andrew Cruse is up for us while Ryan Gehring replies for them as we celebrate Father's Day with a toilet giveaway, something we're all flush with excitement about!
