Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG - Victor Ferrante hit a three-run homer and knocked in four runs, and the Schaumburg Flyers topped the Gary SouthShore RailCats 9-2 Saturday night in front of 5,265 fans at Alexian Field. The win is the Flyers third in a row, and snaps a ten-game skid against the RailCats that ranged back to last season.

The Flyers took a 1-0 lead in the first when Ferrante singled home Vince Harrison who had reached on an error to lead off the inning. In the third, Travis Ezi bunted his way on and scored on Felix Jose's single to make it 2-0.

Ferrante's blast came in the sixth following a Harrison double and a Jason Colson single to push the Schaumburg lead to 5-0. But the Flyers offense wasn't finished. The first five men in the seventh all recorded hits against RailCats relievers Alex Rollin and Eddie De Le Cruz, and the first four would all come around to score. The big inning was highlighted by Jose Valdez's first triple of the season, which scored Jeff Dunbar who had led off with a single. Jose, Harrison, and Colson all recorded their second hit of the night with singles following Valdez's triple.

Flyers starter Ed Almonte had a no-hitter intact with two outs in the fifth when Jeff Beachum hit a slow roller to third for an infield single. The only other RailCats hit came on Jordan Czarniecki's seventh inning two-run homer.

Almonte (3-2) went seven innings to pick up the win, and Jim Popp finished the night with two hitless innings of work. The two hits allowed is the best effort posted by the Flyers staff this season.

Gary starter Grant Johnson (1-1) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs in five innings of work.

Flyers pitcher Dustin Glant will oppose Tom Thornton Sunday at Alexian Field. Tickets are still available for the 1:20 Father's Day game. Fans can bring their dogs to the stadium for the Flyers special "Dog Day" promotion.
