Goldeyes Fight Back For 6-4 Win

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA-The Winnipeg Goldeyes (22-9) scored six unanswered runs, including a four-run 8th inning to beat the Joliet JackHammers 6-4 before 5,508 fans at CanWest Park on Saturday night.

Joliet (12-21) scored an early run in the 2nd inning on a solo home run from 1B Freddy Thon (1-4). He pulled a pitch from Winnipeg RHP Bear Bay off the right field foul pole for a 325 foot solo home run that gave the JackHammers a 1-0 lead.

The JackHammers added two insurance runs in the 5th inning. 3B Andrew Pinckney (2-4) led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt executed by RF Wally Backman, Jr. (1-3) After 2B Isaac Omura (1-4) struck out, CF Adam Klein (1-4) reached base on an error by 2B Josh Asanovich to score Pinckney for a 2-0 Joliet advantage.

Klein scored all the way from first base on a single by LF Gary Harris (1-4) to increase the JackHammers lead to 3-0.

The Goldeyes' bats woke up for two runs in the 6th inning. C Dustin Richardson (1-3) led off the inning with a single and went to second base on a base hit by SS Wes Long.

2B Josh Asanovich (1-3) hit an RBI single to plate Richardson to cut the JackHammers lead to 3-1. Long moved to third base on Assanovich's single.

RF Kevin West (0-2) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Long from third base to make the score 3-2.

Shortell worked six innings and allowed two runs, (both earned), on six hits. He did not walk a man and struck out five Goldeyes in a "no-decision."

The Goldeyes took the lead in the 8th inning against the JackHammers. Richardson struck out against LHP Ryan Paul (1-2). Long hit a single and moved to second base on a walk issued to Assanovich.

Manager Wally Backman lifted Paul out of the game in favor of RHP Drew Shetrone. He walked West to load the bases. DH Juan Diaz (0-4) struck out and CF Cory Patton (1-4) smacked a two-run single to score Long and Assanovich to give the Goldeyes a 4-3 lead.

Winnipeg tacked on two more runs to take a 6-3 lead into the top of the 9th inning.

The JackHammers scored a run in the 9th against Winnipeg closer Matt Davis. Pinckney hit a one-out double and scored on a two-base hit by Omura off the right field wall. The JackHammers rounded out the scoring at 6-4.

The JackHammers and Goldeyes play game three of their series on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. LHP Ryan Gehring (1-1, 3.81) gets the start for Joliet against RHP Andrew Cruse (2-2, 6.68) for Winnipeg. Pre-game coverage begins at 1:15 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.
