Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Ed Almonte and Jim Popp combined to allow only two hits and the Schaumburg Flyers scored plenty in support, downing the Gary SouthShore RailCats 9-2 Saturday night at Alexian Field.
Almonte (3-2) was tough from the outset, retiring the first nine RailCats in a row and keeping the âCats hitless until Jeff Beachum's infield single in the fifth. Jordan Czarniecki finally got a hold of an Almonte pitch in the seventh, launching a two-run home run - his third of the season - but that was all the damage he and his teammates would do. Popp pitched a hitless eighth and ninth to close out the win for Almonte, the same pitcher the RailCats handled in a win at U. S. Steel Yard just six days earlier.
Schaumburg scored single runs in the second and third, then broke the game open in the sixth when Victor Ferrante greeted reliever Alex Rollin with a three-run home run. The Flyers would score four more times off the RailCats bullpen in the seventh to provide the final margin.
Grant Johnson (2-4) suffered the loss in his third straight start against the Flyers, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits in five innings plus. Rollin allowed the next four runs before Eddie De la Cruz was charged with an unearned run in the seventh. The run was the first allowed by De la Cruz this year, snapping a 17.1 inning scoreless streak. The side-arming righty still has not allowed an earned run this year in 18.2 innings.
The Flyers collected 12 hits in the game, getting two each from Jeff Dunbar, Felix Jose, Vince Harrison, Jason Colson and Ferrante. Felix notched a pair of RBI singles and Ferrante finished with four total runs driven in.
The RailCats (16-18) will send Tom Thornton (4-3, 6.00 ERA) to the mound in Sunday's series finale at 1:20 p.m., while the Flyers (18-13) have not announced a starter. The game will be broadcast on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
