Goldeyes Fall to Flyers
August 7, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped the opening game of a three-game set to the Schaumburg Flyers tonight, falling 8-5 before a crowd of 5,483 at Canwest Park.
Schaumburg opened the scoring off Ace Walker in the first. Antoan Richardson singled and stole second, Travis Brown was hit by a pitch and both scored when Victor Ferrante socked the first pitch he saw for his team-leading 14th home run. Jeff Dunbar doubled with one out and scored on a triple by Lyndon Poole, who scored to make it 5-0 when Brent Metheny booted a Tony Mansolino grounder.
Winnipeg responded in the third off Ryan Gehring. With Jeff DeSmidt on and one out, Adam Frost reached on a bunt single and Josh Asanovich struck out. Juan Diaz followed with a double off the right field wall and it was 5-2. Things stayed that way until the sixth.
After Dunbar singled to lead it off, Poole grounded one to Metheny at third. His throw sailed over Cody Ehlers head at first, allowing Dunbar to come all the way around to score. Craig Maddox doubled to score Poole and T.J. Wilson singled to score Maddox and make it 8-2. But the Goldeyes came right back.
Diaz lead off the bottom of the inning with his league-leading 24th home run. Metheny doubled with one out, went to third on a Dee Brown single and scored on a passed ball. Kurt Crowell followed with a chopper that deflected off Maddox at first and bounced toward Wilson at second, prompting Dunbar to race down the line from behind home plate and cover first. Seeing this, Brown rounded third and scored to make it 8-5 when no one was home to receive Wilson's throw.
Gehring (4-8) picked up the win, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts in five-plus innings. Walker (9-4) took the loss after getting touched for eight runs (five earned) on nine hits in six innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Jason Richardson tossed a one-two-three ninth for his fifth save.
This series continues Saturday at 6 p.m. Winnipeg sends Andrew Cruse while Schaumburg counters with Dustin Glant. Great seats starting at just $5 are available at all Ticketmaster locations, including the ballpark box office, by calling 780-3333 or visiting ticketmaster.ca.
