Schaumburg Flyers News Release
WINNIPEG - The Flyers batted around, pouring across five first-inning runs against Ace Walker and held off Winnipeg the rest of the way, topping the Goldeyes 8-5 to snap a five-game skid Friday at CanWest Park.
The Flyers got on the board before the Goldeyes even recorded an out. Antoan Richardson led off the game with a single to left and moved up to second when Travis Brown was hit with an 0-2 pitch. Victor Ferrante then ended an 0-17 slump with a three-run homer to right center, putting the Flyers up 3-0. After Felix Jose popped out, Jeff Dunbar doubled and Lyndon Poole tripled to make it 4-0. A throwing error on a Tony Mansolino grounder allowed Poole to come home, giving the Flyers a 5-0 lead before Winnipeg came to bat.
Juan Diaz drove home Jeff DeSmidt and Adam Frost with a double in the third to make it 5-2.
Schaumburg added three more in the sixth. Dunbar led off with a single and Lyndon Poole reached on the second Goldeyes error of the night, which allowed Dunbar to score. Craig Maddox then doubled home Poole, and TJ Wilson singled to plate Maddox, putting the Flyers up 8-2.
But the Goldeyes answered with three of their own in the bottom half. Diaz led off with a booming homer to left. After a Brent Metheny double, Dee Brown singled to cut it to 8-4. Brown would come home on a throwing error to bring the score to it's final of 8-5.
The Flyers largest run output in the last 11 games followed a seventeen-hour bus trip that started in Gary following Thursday's loss, and finished at the stadium gates in Winnipeg three hours before the first pitch. Richardson, Dunbar, and Brown each had two hits for the Flyers. Diaz ended up a triple short of the cycle, going 3-4 with three RBIs for Winnipeg.
Ryan Gehring (1-0) was effective in his Flyers debut, allowing four earned on eight hits in 5.2 to get the win. Ace Walker falls to 9-4, allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits in six innings of work.
RHP Dustin Glant (5-5, 4.79) throws tomorrow for the Flyers, with RHP Andrew Cruse (5-4, 4.59) countering for the Goldeyes. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00.
