WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (9-4) beat the Sioux Falls Canaries 5-4 at Shaw Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Goldeyes' starting pitcher Zach Nuding pitched six strong innings to earn the win. Nuding (1-0) allowed three earned runs on four hits, walked two, and struck out four.

In the bottom of the first, David Rohm led off with a single to centre field that extended his hitting streak to nine games in a row. Josh Romanski followed with a 14-pitch at bat against Sioux Falls' starter Bryce Morrow that resulted in an RBI double down the right field line. Romanski hit eight two-strike fouls during the at bat. After David Bergin advanced Romanski to third with a groundball to shortstop, Reggie Abercrombie lined a single to centre to make it 2-0. Abercrombie has also hit safely in nine straight. Shawn Pleffner singled through the right side to send Abercrombie to third. The Goldeyes took a 3-0 lead when Mason Katz lifted a sacrifice fly to right.

"Just an excellent baseball game," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney. "Glad we came out on the good side of it. I'm really impressed with what we've seen from Sioux Falls so far. They have some electric arms, and they're going to be tough to beat if their starters get through six good innings. I'm really excited about how my team bounced back. Early morning starts aren't easy."

Bergin extended the lead with a solo home run to left-centre leading off the bottom of the third. Bergin has now homered in three consecutive games.

"A lot of it is staying with the same approach," said Bergin regarding his recent home run surge. "We've got a solid lineup all the way through. Everyone is starting to hit. It's really exciting to see everyone get going."

Katz threw out Ty Morrison trying to steal second base for the final out in the top of the fourth. It was one of several key defensive plays for Katz who also caught three foul popups behind the plate.

Andrew Sohn opened the bottom of the fifth with a double to right field. After Morrow retired the next two hitters, Romanski lined a single to left to drive in Sohn with the Goldeyes' fifth run.

"We've got some talent, there's no doubt about it," said Romanski. "For guys to be clicking this early, it's a good sign. We'll go through peaks and valleys, but it's up to us to pick up the nexy guy. It's a credit to those guys at the bottom of the order like Darvill. When he's been on base, he takes the attention off the batters because of his base stealing. I just try to put the ball in play, and I've been fortunate enough to find some holes."

Sioux Falls (4-8) scored three times in the sixth to pull within two runs. Dan Motl led off with a double and was singled home two batters later by BJ Guinn. After Chris Jacobs flied out to right, Morrison hit a two-run home run to right field.

In the top of the seventh, an Aaron Gretz single and a Michael Falsetti double led to a sacrifice fly from Motl that pulled the Canaries within one run. With the tying run on third base and two outs, Mitchell Lambson retired Blake Schmit on a foul popup that Katz caught near the backstop to end the inning.

Lambson and Victor Capellan combined on a perfect top of the eighth.

In the ninth, Patrick Fiala led off with a single. After Ryan Chaffee got Gretz to line out to right field, Falsetti walked to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Burt Reynolds pinch hit for Cody Coffman and hit a deep flyball to left that was caught by Roamnski. Chaffee then struck out Motl to end the game and record his fifth save of the year.

Morrow (0-1) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in four innings. Morrow walked one and struck out three.

The Goldeyes combined for five stolen bases, including two each from Abercrombie and Wes Darvill. Abercrombie flied out to centre field in the bottom of the fourth in what was his 7,000th at bat as a professional (Major League, affiliated minor leagues, Mexican summer league, and independent minor leagues).

The four-game series concludes Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Edwin Carl (0-0, 2.92) faces right-hander Grady wood (0-0, 4.91).
