Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The GarySouthShore RailCats announced on Wednesday evening the signing of 2016 reliever Christian Herstine, who replaces LHP Jeff McKenzie on the 23-man active roster after fracturing his left fibula in Tuesday's 11-0 defeat to the Kansas City T-Bones.
Herstine went 1-0 with 10 strikeouts and a 1.04 ERA in five relief appearances (8.2 innings) with the RailCats last year before having his contract purchased by the New York Yankees on July 7, 2016. Herstine made his professional debut with the RailCats on June 22, striking out two batters in two scoreless innings of relief.
McKenzie was acquired from the Lincoln Saltdogs on January 4th in exchange for RHP Richard Castillo. In three starts this season, the southpaw was 0-2 with a 5.39 ERA. McKenzie's best start came back on Friday, May 26, where the left-hander allowed two unearned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out a season-high seven over seven innings.
Gary continues their seven-game homestand and four-game series vs. Kansas City on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday's pitching duel features 2016 All-Star Charle Rosario (1-1, 4.08) and Kansas City right-hander Gabe Perez (1-0, 3.48).
