4-RUN 3RD KEYS WICHITA WIN

The Wichita Wingnuts scored four in the third to take the lead for good in an 8-2 win over the Salina Stockade Tuesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The Stockade opened the scoring with a run in the first, as Jesse Baker collected an RBI single to plate Roche Woodard. Wichita tied it up in the second, as Matt Chavez launched the first pitch of the inning from TJ Looney for a solo shot, his second homer of the year. The Wingnuts broke the deadlock in the third, plating four. Christian Stringer untied the game with an RBI single, and one out later, TJ Mittelstaedt took Looney deep for a three-run homer, his first of the season. Wichita stretched their lead to six with a pair in the fourth. Leo Vargas continued a hot homestand with a sacrifice fly, his fifth RBI of the stand. Harrison Kain then followed with a run-scoring single to stretch the lead to 7-1. The six-run margin was plenty for Ryan Kussmaul, who settled in after allowing a first inning run to post zeroes in his last five innings. The two teams traded runs late against each other's bullpen, giving the Wingnuts their fifth win in six tries against Salina.

KUSS OFF THE SCHNEID

Ryan Kussmaul gave the Wingnuts six innings last night, his third straight start of exactly six frames so far this season, as he picked up his first win of the campaign. The veteran righty tossed his best outing to date, yielding one run on four hits while striking out a season-high five. After allowing that run and a pair of hits in the first, Kussmaul bounced back to hold the Stockade to two baserunners for the rest of his outing, and retire 12 of the final 13 batters he faced. The right-hander did not yield a walk to Salina, his second straight outing without allowing a base on balls, making 14 straight innings that Kussmaul has avoided issuing a walk.

LEO LASHING LATELY

Shortstop Leo Vargas has been red hot at the plate for Wichita on the current homestand, going 9-for-17 at the dish with five runs batted in and three more runs scored. The stand started with a career-high tying four-hit performance against Winnipeg last Thursday in a 19-4 Wingnuts rout. During the five-game stand, Vargas has raised his season batting average from .143 to .316.
