Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped the final game of a three-game set to the Gary SouthShore RailCats this afternoon, falling 16-4 before a crowd of 6,026 at Canwest Park. With the sweep, Winnipeg's lead over the RailCats shrunk to just three games.
Gary opened the scoring off Bear Bay in the second. Anthony Esquer singled to lead it off, moved up on a one-out walk to Mike Massaro and scored on a Chris Carrara single. Massaro went to third on the play and scored on a Jay Pecci sacrifice fly. The visitors added to their lead after batting around in the fourth. With Jeff Beachum on first, Anthony Esquer hit a two-out shot to left for his first home run of the year. Rob Marconi singled, went to third on Massaro single and scored on a Carrara single. Pecci singled to score Massaro and it was 6-0.
Blanked through five by Tom Thornton while held to just two singles, the Goldeyes got on the board with two out in the sixth. Kevin West singled, Cody Ehlers walked and Dee Brown snapped a nasty 0-16 slide with a single to right to score West. Gary got that run back and a lot more over the final two innings. With two out in the eighth and Pecci on first, Steve Haake took Derek Feldkamp deep to left for his team-leading eighth home run. It went from bad to worse in the ninth when the RailCats sent 13 men to the plate.
Beachum doubled to start the inning and scored on a one-out single by Esquer. Marconi singled and Massaro singled to score Esquer. That was it for Feldkamp as Cory Patton entered. Carrara walked, Pecci singled to score Marconi and Haake doubled to score Massaro and Carrara. Jordan Czarniecki singled to score Pecci before Beachum bounced into a fielder's choice that scored Haake. Rohde doubled to score Beachum to make it 16-1. Winnipeg got three back in the bottom of nine off Eddie De La Cruz. Dustin Richardson doubled with one out, Brent Metheny walked with two out and Jeff DeSmidt singled to score Richardson. West followed with a double to score Metheny and DeSmidt to make it a 16-4 final.
Thornton (7-3) took over the league-lead in victories with the win, allowing the one run on five hits in seven innings, walking three and fanning three. Bay (5-2) took the loss after getting stuck for six runs on 10 hits in seven innings, walking three and fanning four.
This series concluded today. Following the game, the Goldeyes left for Schaumburg for four games with the Flyers before wrapping up an eight-game road trip in Fargo with the RedHawks. Winnipeg next plays at home on July 21 when Kansas City arrives for the first of three games.
