Schaumburg Flyers News Release
JOLIET, IL - A seventh inning wild pitch from Flyers starter Ed Almonte allowed Andrew Pinckney to score the decisive run in a 5-4 Joliet victory Sunday at Silver Cross Field.
Schaumburg got the lead in the second inning on a Jeff Dunbar solo home run, but Joliet quickly answered back with a run in the bottom half on a Wally Backman Jr. sacrifice fly, scoring Pinckney to tie the game at one. The JackHammers would take their first lead of the night on a Freddie Thon solo shot in the fourth.
Dunbar led off the Flyers' sixth with a double and scored on a Vince Harrison single to even it at two. The Hammers responded with two of their own in their half of the sixth inning with Danny Cox looping a double down the left field line with the bases loaded, scoring Thon and Alberts who had both singled. It was Cox's first extra base hit of his three-year professional career, and it gave Joliet a 4-3 lead.
Schaumburg got a run on a past ball and on a Jose Valdez single in the seventh to once again tie the game at four, but the JackHammers would answer once more.
After Almonte struck out Brad Correll to lead off the seventh, Pinckney, Thon, and Tim Alberts all singled to load the bases before Pinckney came home on the wild pitch to put Joliet up for good.
Almonte (4-5) was charged with the loss, allowing ten hits through seven innings of work, giving up all five runs. Derek Barrows, making his second start for the Hammers, allowed just two runs on six scattered hits in six innings of work but received a no-decision. The win went to Brian Reith (1-0), who allowed two runs in the seventh. Devin Anderson picked up his first save, pitching a scoreless final two frames.
The Flyers return to Alexian for a four-game set with the Northern League-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes, with the first game beginning at 7:05 on Monday night. The Goldeyes will throw RHP Mark Michael (0- 1, 1.06). The Flyers have not announced a starter.
