JOLIET-The Joliet JackHammers (20-32) scored a run on a wild pitch from RHP Ed Almonte (4-5) in the 7th inning to snap a 4-4 tied score and beat the Schaumburg Flyers 5-4 before 2,169 fans at Silver Cross Field on Sunday night.
The Flyers (24-24) scored a run in the 2nd inning on a solo home run by LF Jeff Dunbar (2-4). He smacked a leadoff home run over the left field wall for a 1-0 Schaumburg lead.
The JackHammers scored a single run in the 2nd inning. 3B Andrew Pinckney(1-3) led off the inning with a walk and moved to third base on a single produced by 1B Freddie Thon (4-4). DH Tim Alberts (2-4) popped out to second base and RF Wally Backman, Jr. (0-2) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Pinckney for a 1-1 tied score.
Joliet took a 2-1 lead in the 4th inning when Thon hit a solo home run over the right field wall. It was the 7th home run of his season and provided the JackHammers with their first lead of the game.
The Flyers tied the game in the 6th inning with a run against Joliet RHP Derek Barrows. Dunbar doubled and moved to third base when 1B Craig Maddox (0-4) popped out to center field. 3B Vince Harrison (3-4) hit a single over the drawn-in infield for a 2-2 tied score.
The JackHammers pushed across two runs of their own in the 6th inning to take a 4-2 lead. Pinckney popped out to center field. Thon and Alberts responded with back-to-back singles. Backman, Jr. walked to load the bases.
2B Danny Cox hit a two-run double to score both Thon and Alberts and give the JackHammers a two-run advantage.
The Flyers tied the game in with two runs in the 7th inning against RHP Brian Reith (1-0) but the JackHammers took the lead in the 8th inning. Pinckney singled and moved to second base on a single by Thon. Alberts loaded the bases with a single before Almonte unleashed a wild pitch that scored Pinckney for a 5-4 Joliet lead.
Reith tossed one inning and allowed two runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out two in his first appearance in a JackHammers uniform after signing a contract on Friday.
Loose Gravel: Sunday was the final game of the season-series for the JackHammers and Flyers. Joliet went 8-11 against the Flyers in 2009.
