Gober Goes Seven as Vipers Win Again

Winning their fourth straight game the Calgary Vipers (7-7) defeated the Chico Outlaws (5-8) 8-4 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. On the mound Calgary starter Dusty Gober (1-1) threw seven innings while allowing only three hits for two runs. The right hander tossed 22 first pitch strikes to the 26 batters he faced and also threw 60 strikes compared to 29 balls for his economical 89 pitches in total. At the plate rookie Louie Templeton collected two two-run doubles for four runs batted in while Wilver Perez collected three hits while scoring twice and driving in two runs. Calgary scored three times in the first inning and four times in the fourth frame to take an early 8-0 lead.

Out of the bullpen Scott Watson threw a scoreless ninth inning while Danny Bravo (1-1) took the loss for Chico after giving up eight runs in four innings.

Calgary jumped onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning as Jonny Kaplan and Bryan Burke singled, Wilver Perez followed with a run batted in base hit, and with two outs and two strikes Louie Templeton blasted a two-run double for a 3-0 advantage.

The Vipers added another run in the second frame when Gober singled, Kaplan reached on a fielding error, Burke walked to load the bases, and Perez delivered another RBI base hit for a 4-0 lead.

In the fourth Calgary added to the lead as with two outs Perez singled, Drew Miller doubled for a RBI, Justin Tellam reached on a throwing error, Templeton collected his second two-run double, and Jimmy Rohan knocked in one with a base hit for a 8-0 advantage.

Chico got a run back in the fifth for a 8-1 score when Al Quintana singled, Jake Rife doubled, and Kurt Steinhauer collected a sacrifice fly.

The Outlaws plated another run in the seventh inning as Rife went deep for a solo home run and a 8-2 game.

Two more runs were scored by Chico in the eighth frame when Jay Pecci singled, Bobby Hill walked, Brian McFall singled in a run, and after an error Chris Lubanski drove in one with a groundout for a 8-4 score.

This four-game series against the Chico Outlaws continues on Friday June 10th at 6:30 for Country Day with the first pitch coming off a horse from Griffin Valley Ranch along with ponies and live music by Jacquie Drew, on Saturday June 11th at 5:05 for Pack the Park and Magnet Schedule giveaway, and on Sunday June 12th at 1:35 with a $60.00 Family Pack (4 upper bowl tickets, 4 drinks, 4 hot dogs, and a program).
