Seattle Reign FC News Release
Tacoma, WA - Reign FC announced today that it has placed goalkeeper Michelle Betos on the Season-Ending Injury list. Betos ruptured her Achilles tendon in second-half stoppage time of the club's win against Sky Blue FC on May 18.
"We're devastated to lose Michelle for the season," Reign FC head coach Vlatko Andonovski said. "She's part of the soul of this defense and has been a tremendous presence for us. It is a testament to her character that she wanted to keep playing in that match, even after the injury. We know that we can still count on her presence in the locker room, but we're going to miss her on the field."
Betos was injured while diving to stop a dangerous cross to the back post by Sky Blue's Caprice Dydasco. The stop denied an opportunity for Sky Blue to tally a potential equalizer as Reign FC won its first match of the season.
Centerback and team captain Lu Barnes shared a message of support for the injured keeper.
"Michelle has been a vital part of this team," Barnes said. "She is the true definition of 'teammate' and is an inspiration to me personally and to the team. As we continue our journey this year we will miss her leadership on the field, but her presence off the field is just as important to our team's success. We wish her a speedy recovery and know she will be back stronger than ever. We will be supporting her along the way at every step."
Betos finishes the season with 14 saves and one clean sheet. Her 0.75 goals-against average in 359 minutes played is the third best in the league.
