Gladiators Win Game 2, Beat Stingrays 3-2, Lead
April 6, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Joey Haddad broke a 2-2 tie with 16 seconds left in the third period to lift the Gwinnett Gladiators to a 3-2 win over the South Carolina Stingrays in Game 2 of the ECHL Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Gwinnett now leads the best-of-seven series 2-games-to-0.
Haddad's goal was his second consecutive game-winning goal of the post season for the Gladiators. Haddad muscled into the slot and ripped a snap-shot that beat Stingrays' netminder Ryan Zapolski to the short-side for his first goal of the game. Doug Jones also had an assist on the game winning goal for Gwinnett.
Gwinnett had broken a 1-1 tie earlier in the third period on Evan Bloodoff's first goal of the post-season. Bloodoff re-directed Ryan Ginand's shot from the point on the power play at 5:31 of the period for the marker. Casey Pierro-Zabotel added an assist on the goal that gave the Gladiators a 2-1 lead.
South Carolina answered for the second time in the game as Derek Foam beat Louis Domingue from the right wing circle at 9:57 of the third period to tie the game at two to set the stage for Haddad's heroics.
Gwinnett opened the scoring in the game back in the first period when the Gladiators capitalized on a Stingrays defensive turnover at the blue line as Ryan Ginand corralled the loose puck in the neutral zone and then beat Zapolski on a breakaway for the goal. The unassisted goal at 6:30 of the first period was Ginand's first goal with the Gladiators since he was acquired by Gwinnett on March 7th.
The Stingrays got on the board and tied the game at one with 5:11 left in the opening period. Jay Silvia took a centering pass in the slot before he rolled the puck past Gwinnett netminder Louis Domingue for the goal. Chris Langkow and Andrew Hirshfield had the assists on the goal for South Carolina.
Domingue finished with 16 save in the win for Gwinnett as he won his eighth consecutive game for Gwinnett dating back to March 9th.
Game 3 of the Best-of-Seven series is on Wednesday, April 10th at the North Charleston Coliseum at 7:05 p.m.
The Gladiators are the ECHL Affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League and are members of the ECHL, the Premier "AA" Hockey League and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
