Atlanta Gladiators News Release


The Gwinnett Gladiators ended their three week, nine-game road trip with a 2-0 shutout win against the Idaho Steelheads last Saturday. The Gladiators posted a 2-1-0-0 record in last week's games against two Mountain Division teams. Gwinnett remains in first place in the South Division with 77 points and a 37-25-2-1 record. The Gladiators are currently ranked third in the Eastern Conference.

Orlando Preview: The Orlando Solar Bears have dropped their last four games, all against Atlantic Division opponents and are 3-6-1-0 in their last 10 games. Orlando won the last meeting against Gwinnett, a 4-2 victory for the Solar Bears on February 22nd. Orlando is ranked last in the South Division with 58 points and a 26-30-3-3 record. Forward Matthew Sisca leads the Solar Bears with 48 points in 59 games.

Wednesday, March 6: Gwinnett 5, Utah 1 - W

"ªThe Gwinnett Gladiators notched a 5-1 win over the Utah Grizzlies in the first ever meeting between the two teams. Gwinnett used 36 saves from Louis Domingue and two goals from Sacha Guimond to lead the Gladiators to the win. Guimond's first opened the scoring while Evan Bloodoff notched the eventual game winner with just two seconds left in the first period for Gwinnett. Guimond's second of the night pushed the lead to 3-0 before the second intermission. Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Joey Haddad rounded out the scoring for Gwinnett with third period goals. Utah's Berkley Scott snapped Domingue's shutout bit with 1:41 left in the third period.

Friday, March 8: Idaho 5, Gwinnett 3 - L

Gwinnett's leading scorer Casey Pierro-Zabotel scored the first goal of the game 8:07 into the first period with an assist from Tristin Llewellyn to give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead through the opening period. Idaho answered with a pair of second period goals to take a 2-1 lead. Scott Todd scored the first goal at the 9:26 mark, followed by Austin Smith's goal at the 14:53 mark. Gwinnett answered as Scott Arnold picked up his seventh tally of the season with a goal 16:12 into the second period for a 2-2 tie after two periods. The Steelheads scored their third goal of the game 3:21 into the third period from forward Rylan Galiardi. Gwinnett again answered, this time on a goal by Casey Pierro-Zabotel at 10:09 of the third to tie the score at three. Chase Schaber had the game winner for Idaho with 5:09 left in the third and the Steelheads added an empty netter from Justin Taylor with 45 seconds left in the contest.

Saturday, March 9: Gwinnett 2, Idaho 0 - W

The Gwinnett Gladiators used two power play goals and 40 saves from Louis Domingue to knock off the Idaho Steelheads 2-0 on Saturday night at the CenturyLink Arena in Boise, ID. Sacha Guimond scored the first of two power play goals for the Gladiators early in the third to break a scoreless tie. Evan Bloodoff notched his 20th goal of the season for Gwinnett for the Gladiators second power play goal of the game at 11:11 of the third to put the game out of reach. The shutout was Domingue's third of the season for Gwinnett.

News & Notes:

A First! Defenseman Brad Nunn appeared in his third game with the Gladiators in Wednesday's 5-1 win over Utah. The rookie out of SUNY Fredonia collected his first professional point, an assist, in the win over the Grizzlies. Nunn has now earned one assist in five games with Gwinnett.

As Goes Bloodoff, so go the Gladiators: In the Gladiators last six games, Evan Bloodoff has notched a goal in four of those contests. Gwinnett has won all four of those games that he has scored in in that stretch. Gwinnett dropped a 3-2 decision to Florida on March 2nd and notched a 5-3 loss to Idaho on March 8th, both games the Nelson, BC native did not score in.

Blanked! Gladiators netminder Louis Domingue notched 40 saves against the Idaho Steelheads on March 9th for his 3rd shutout of the season. His 40 save performance is the most for the netminder among his three shutouts this season. It's also the most saves by a Gladiators netminder this season in a shutout performance. Jody O'Neill made 40 saves while with Las Vegas in a 5-0 win over San Francisco on February 6th.

Leading the League: Gladiators forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel continues to lead the ECHL in scoring. The forward has notched 74 points (21 goals, 53 assists) in 65 games this season with Gwinnett. Pierro-Zabotel has averaged over a point-per-game for Gwinnett and on his current pace, would finish the season with 82 points.

20-Goal Scorers: Evan Bloodoff and Casey Pierro-Zabotel each notched their 20th goals of the season this past week for Gwinnett. Pierro-Zabotel collected his 20th goal of the season in the Gladiators 5-3 loss to Idaho on Friday while Bloodoff collected his 20th goal of the season in the Gladiators 2-0 win over Idaho on Saturday night. Gwinnett finished with two 20-goal scorers in each of the past two seasons.
